Buying Advice Turbo or not

A turbo isnt rocket science. They can be rebuilt if needed and are not that expensive if you have to replace one. They are mainstream auto technology and I would not be concerned in the least if one motor had a turbo and one did not.

I guess you never saw the BSA motorcycle ads for their 4 cylinder engine they use. a glass full of water sitting on the seat don't lose a single drop with the engine running!.. the whole glass would fall off a 3 cylinder version.. and I still say curved torque is less desirable!. I'll agree that turbocharged engines are more efficient, though..

When was that ad published? Back in the 1960's? Besides BSA to my knowledge never made a 4 cylinder. A lot has changed in the last 50 years or so:)

a turbocharger has a lag, and operates at an extremely fast RPM, and can't compete with a supercharger, much lower RPM, instant response, and much higher boost possible.. so, if the choice came down to a turbocharger or displacement, and a supercharger is ruled out, displacement is better!..

You are talking about early gas units that were poorly designed.

Turbo diesels were better matched systems from the get go.

That said, in lower altitudes I would prefer a less complex NA powerplant. Buying used I won't shy away from either. I own one of each.

On the series of backhoes like mine they made them both ways with a scant 5 hp difference. Having machines for different altitudes is the only logical reason I can see for that.

actually, checking around, it was a BMW 2 cylinder horizontally opposed engine, I was mistaken. but they did have an ad for it that they put a glass of water on the running motorcycle, and didn't spill a drop!.. this was around the 80's.. I can't find the ad for that, though..

If you have a turbo you should idle the engine for few minutes before you shut it down. Otherwise it might be too hot and "cooks" the oil in bearings.

maybe there's a safety that won't let you shut the engine down until the turbo has cooled off?.. but, maybe not..

The John Deere manual for the 310 backhoe says half throttle for 5 minutes after heavy load.

And if you don't do it they will be happy to sell you new turbo. That is why there isn't safety timer. Tractor isn't an airplane.

I had aircraft mechanic training, and an aircraft with a turbocharger needs special training to fly it.. Aircraft Engine Turbochargers Explained... also, Aircraft engine parts, especially with the required repair/installation by a qualified mechanic, is VERY expensive.. everything has to be maintained on a schedule, and logged, and each aircraft has it's own schedule for that.. you can't be flying an aircraft that could suddenly lose power.. of course, a Tractor is a bit different, but, you still need to operate it properly to avoid a catastrophe...
