For the last 8-10 years a friend has been talking about his JD M that his father bought new. I think he has been holding out for his son or grandchildren to take interest. He has come to the conclusion they are not interested at all. Ran in to him yesterday and he said "lets ride down here and see it." He did not have a key to unlock the barn door/gate but I think I have enough idea for preliminary.

Been in a shed for 12-15 years...was backed in and parked. Just before parking it had new rubber all around, new radiator, and a "motor rebuild". It has definitely been worked hard since '48. Currently all I see is a Woods belly mower mounted on it and a pair of rear wheel weights. He claims a draw bar is there too.

I finally asked him what he wanted for it and he opened at $2500. I told him I would research and let him know.

Way I see it, tires are flat and questionable. Has a GM alternator on it.. and a non running tractor is a non running tractor. My gut says $1,000-1,200.

It will not be a flipper tractor but I need another project like a hole in my head. Am I way off base or is he?

A "decent" complete Deere M with good tin where I live, is worth around $2,500.00...

I wouldn't care to sell you MY M even for $2,500.00

Ohh I am sure I can make it go...I once did a 420C many moons ago from Coastal SC. I just have no intention of over paying...nor do I want to 'who do' him.

I'd want to make sure the engine is not stuck, probably not with a helmet on the exhaust.
Tires may air up fine if they have been out of the sun and not all cracked.
Tin looks pretty good for the age.
I am thinking $1500- $2000 if tires prove good.

A JD M was the first tractor my brother and I owned. It was comfortable for me to drive. I'm only 5'9" now and was probably close to that then. Keep in mind it doesn't have a factory 3pt hitch and I'm thinking the flat tires have probably developed weak spots where they folded as the rims touched the ground.

I'd say to him.. "$2500 if you pull it out, dust it off, pump up the tires, get it to crank over and run.. then I'll decide but won't low ball your price. But $1500 as is.."

l would leave the decision up to him, or you walk.

But really is your decision to make the call.

Last October at and auction I put a running rebuilt engine easy start and fresh paint. J.D. M when the auctioneer came to the tractor . The Duffy's helper of his flooded the engine almost run down the battery. when got to running never reset the choke and so a smoking tractor . very few bids and quick sale for 750 bucks.

So might look around the amount of money others are saying would buy a more usable tractor.

My opinion of course know where 2 M's are sitting and owner wants 450 each comes with farm equipment also.

I appreciate everyone's input. I think I will make him an offer. If he doesn't like it.. I will help him market it for sale. I try not to get wrapped up in anything I am trying to buy. If I was hunting a tractor it would probably be a 420 or a B....but I haven't been looking one for a while.
