gravelman here..not sure how small a "tractor" we are allowed to talk about here but i have a 2014 Simplicity ride on mower with a Briggs and Stratton 18 hp engine. It will start and run but only for a short time. I changed fuel filter, same thing. I see a small black plastic item, must be fuel pump?? with 3 lines in/out of it. Could it be this?? Any guidance much appreciated.

If the oil dip stick doesn't seal the fuel pump can't pump because it rely s on crankcase pulse.
You might check the tank vent system too.
They used to just have a vent but now they have to capture emissions.

That sounds like a vacuum fuel pump. Fuel in, fuel out, and vacuum line makes three.

Before just replacing the fuel pump, make up a temporary fuel supply. A mustard plastic bottle or similar with a narrrow spout the rubber gas line to the carb will slide onto. Put gas in the mustard bottle, turn it upside down so gas flows out of bottle and into carb.

If the engine now runs OK you should replace fuel pump. (3 hoses)

Just make sure its higher than the carb. That's how I found out my fuel pump was bad.... the tractor ran fine as long as the fuel level was higher than the carb. Once it dropped lower than the level of the carb, the engine would sputter and die.
