Build and AR15 in 6.8 SPC. Very little recoil, up to a 120grn pill dang near 3000fps. And is a hog buster!!! It takes a regular upper and lower, but requires a dedicated bolt, barrel, and mags. Around a $1.00 a round for Hornady SST.

The only thing the cost would be a little higher in the 6.8 you could build one for less than $550 for sure. The bolt would be the most expensive at around $200 and then the barrel at $130. The rest of the gun is standard AR15 parts. Parts now are easily found and cheap now.

It's nothing to these ARs, very easy to work on, tons of how to videos.

Ya'll building it together will be priceless and that AR can be handed down for a long long time.

WARNING tho!! It's hard to have just one AR. I got fo now. Absolutely a blast to plink with.
I already have a 6.5 Grendel AR, but the reason for wanting a bolt action, 1 is price, but second is it teaches better shooting, I think. Let's face it, when you have 20-30 on tap, how often to you take the time to shoot each shot like it's your only one.

I would second the recommendation for a 30-06 (or a .308). Can cheaply be loaded for just about anything from mice to elephants (slight exaggeration :)). My personal prejudice is that the Axis is a poor choice because of the plastic spring that holds the magazine in. Not sure what the long term reliability is.

I recommend a Savage. They're one of the most accurate out of the box rifles you can buy. A .308 can be loaded down until it kicks like a .243, and all the way up to hunt most anything in north America with a "maybe" on brown bear..

They shoot to 1000 yds if he's interested, and can be easily rebarreled to almost any caliber. Many owners do it themselves. , as they sell the wrench and headspace gauges.
My first 5 shots out of mine, brand new. one boresighted, and the next 4 went thru the same hole at 100 yds. Got pics and a witness. No, I couldn't do it again, but it regularly shoots 3/4 MOA

The Axis line is a little more trimmed down, but very accurate.

And they make a model called Hoghunter..

Understood, and understand the bolt action. I got my son a X-bolt 7mm08 in wood. I think I have $900 in it with a scope from santa years ago. I wanted him to have a nice deer gun that he could hand down to his son one day. At 19 he is still enjoying the X bolt micro.

If you consider (divide) the cost of a firearm over the years an owner will have and use it (as well as resale value)...initial cost seems less staggering IMO...

I like Savage bolt actions;for a life-time ,buy it once gun I would purchase a Tika.7mm/08 would be my first choice for a new shooter;still enough gun for most animals in the U.S.

I hate the word "cheap", especially when it comes to firearms. None of the above mentioned are that; although several, especially the Axis and American are inexpensive quality rifles.

We bought our then 14-year-old grandson a Savage model 11/111 Trophy Hunter xp .308 with a scope. It is a very versatile rifle and seems sturdy to me. I like the trigger. We chose the .308 caliber for versatility. As others have said, it is good with the proper load for 200 yards or more (more IMO). Our deer hunting is unlikely to require a shot that is too long for the .308. I think that this rifle is a good investment, especially if you can buy it on sale.
