Warning for all

It is worth remembering in the US constitution that penal servitude remains an option. It doesn't even have to be "hard labor" (which may be overall a net drain), but some sort of manufacturing that no-one in the US is willing to do at prevailing in the competitive labor market. e.g. something that is presently done in SE Asia. Perhaps even a Chinese company could be contracted to oversee the factory. :-D

But it is a real shame that in the area of that government service that people actually most need-- police protection and criminal and civil justice-- the state is basically failing. But this isn't the "friendly politics" thread, so I'm not going to go on about how this proves anarchocapitalist libertarians right. ;-)

Doofy - I'm a tad surprised that you would have theft up in your neck of the woods. It would take a real swinging set of brass cojones to mess with anybody where you live. I would guess the word up there is - - "bodies are seldom located, once lost".

Hahahaha. This is true. The Great Copper River is but 20 miles away. It appears that the criminal element is slithering out of Anchorage and the Valley. They blame Heroin and Meth as the cause of most crime here but I believe that people just don't want to work anymore. Judicial system is overwhelmed and prisons are overcrowded and since the Legislature has pi**ed away all the money on pipe dreams, "Catch and Release" is the name of the game now. No deterrent for crime.

Seems as though, good, honest people have no protections under the law anymore. A friend I went to school with owned and operated a liquor store in Anchorage. Some Bozo robbed the store at gunpoint and was shot in the Azz by the owner. Bozo sued and won saying the owner used excessive force! Go Figure!

I figured the rotten element would be coming up out of Anchorage and the valley. Man - that's a rather long drive for what could end up being a fairly hostile reception.

I alway liked going over to Copper Center and watch the native fish wheels at work. Bought my share of "line dried" Sockeye salmon in the day.

Our wx here is finally getting warm. Have a great weekend, Doofy.

Guess the moral of that story is make sure they don't get back up. Years ago when my wife was single living by herself in Houston Tx, she had an Irish Wolf Hound. Someone tried breaking into her apartment while she was sleeping. Guy popped a window open open from the the fire escape. Guy got half way through the window when the dog went after him. Chased the guy into a park and pinned him by the throat.

Wife called the cops. Then cops came and got her to go down to the park to get the dog to release the perp. :D She got sued by the guy and had to go to court over it. Judge told the guy he got what he deserved and through the case out :D

We have two German shepherd's now, brother and sister. Both were trained for there dispositions. Ours (female) is a service/ therapy dog. She will alert if someone comes in unannounced, but is more of a lover. The male who stays with our daughter and son in law, is a personal protection dog.

When ever we go on vacation, he comes and stays at our house. There's only 4 people that can command that dog. Me, my wife, daughter and son in law. Come in announced and he will attack.

oosik, I just realized we have 375 Million Acres of land up here and I have a Backhoe! Also, the bears are hungry because the salmon are late.

The risk is everywhere. However, we have few problems now. They found out that my wife WILL shoot.

Here's proof crime doesn't pay...
Years ago a friend was manager of a store in a small town. He had to go to court every week for shoplifters. One day the court attorney said to the judge this guy has to take off from work and the thief gets a small fine, which is wrong. The judge said you're right...so what did this guy shoplift? My friend says a pair of shoes. Judge says o.k., 30 days in jail...$100 fine. Next one...same punishment.
Within a few weeks shoplifting stopped. Apparently word got out!

Anyone in jail should have to work...pay is $2/hour...only they don't get money the victim does and it helps pay room&board.
