Bear hunting with a switch?

I heard about this a long time ago. I had reason to doubt the story, but it may well be true. Many years ago I read a story that indicated that the Eskimos used the .222 caliber almost exclusively and loaded most of their ammo...even killed Polar bears with it. I opined that the story might have been embellished a bit in the telling...but there are stories of killing a moose with a .22lR, so I know that it's important to hit what you shoot at.

Bear attacks are occurring startling frequency up in Alaska. 4 attacks last week with 2 fatalities.
One of the attacks was rare because it was said to be predatory. The victim was being hunted by a black bear.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is still on the hunt for a black bear that mauled and killed 16-year-old Patrick Cooper. Meanwhile, experts recommend caution to those venturing into bear habitat as summer heats up.

The fatal incident took place on June 18 during an annual trail race that has been held in the region for the past 29 years. The three-mile trail began at Bird Ridge in Alaska's Chugach State Park and involved a 3,400-foot vertical ascent through heavily wooded terrain.

"If we find the bear, we definitely want to kill it," said Ken Marsh, a representative from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

"This has all the earmarks of a predatory attack: A bear attack deliberately targeting a human being," said Marsh.

Cooper was reportedly texting during the time of his attack, telling his family he was being chased by a bear. It's believed he may have been separated from his fellow runners after running through thick brush and veering from the trail. Other runners reported seeing brown bears and black bears with cubs along the trail.

RobertBrown - a VAST majority of the Alaska bear attacks are against unknowing tourists. Its a REAL TOUGH way to learn that all bears are not Yogi Bear or the friendly bear at your local zoo.

Personal safety is why the Fish & Game laws for Alaska REQUIRE a non-resident person have a guide while hunting any large game. They want a witness when the bear mauls the non-resident - ha,ha,ha.

I lived in Alaska for twenty two years and I've actually seen tourists walk towards brown bears with their cameras up to their face. God All Mighty - Man - - when this bear raises up to full height he is 9 feet tall and weighs 1200 pounds. I saw all this during the fall salmon runs on the Nunavac River on the Alaskan Penninsula.

The only action that could be worse than challenging a brown bear on his natural feeding grounds - - get between a mother bear and her cubs.

I don't know about all that "22 years of Alaska experience" stuff when it comes to bears, oosik. The interwebs are quite clear about:

What To Do If You See A Bear

1) Find a stick.
2) If the bear is sleeping, gently wake it by poking with the stick.
3) Rub the bear's belly with the stick.
4) Share your beef jerky. (bears will eat from your hands!)
5) Don't forget to take lots of selfie pics and/or video of your magical encounter with 'your' bear.

*This information must be true... it's on the intertubes!

Well - Holy Crap there Wagtail. That probably explains all the bear attack problems Alaska tourists have. Tourists are forgetting step #4 - share your beef jerky.

This is obviously funny to all on TBN but your five steps may be taken seriously by tourists who frequent the intertubes. ANYBODY that would willingly approach a brown, grizzly or black bear while feeding - for any reason - just has a lot lacking upstairs.

Here is an accurate explanation of the total lack of reasoning by a tourist. 1967 - Anchorage, Ak - a local seller of native Alaska artifacts and fur clothing - - Jonas Bros. Shows a video made by a tourist - in the video you see a black bear totally RIP a man to shreds. This man got between the mother black bear and her cubs and was attempting to feed the cubs. The man died instantly - the black bear was later dispatched and he weight 167 pounds.

It was completely obvious in this video - the man did not stand a snowballs chance in H E L L against the 167 pound black bear.

Now - how do you think that would translate to an enraged brown or grizzly bear weighing anywhere from 900 to 1200 pounds.

One swipe and you are history.

If you are lucky - the authorities may find your remains so you can have a Christian burial.

a .338 is much better for a bear, I've seen the damage it did to a wild boar, and there's no way a bear would survive that.. and the price of the gun and ammo is reasonable. Remington or Winchester, the Lapua is truly awesome, but so is the price..$$$.

I don't know your experience with wild bears there on Long Island - radios 1 - but the preferred calibre that guides use in Alaska is 12 gauge shot gun or 460 Weatherby Magnum. Why the magnum - well, they can bag Alaskan grouse(Ptarmigan) by shooting a 410 round in the 460. No need for two guns if you prefer the 460 over 12 gauge.
