I'm not sure if bear comments from the lower 48 states fit in the Alaskan bear discussion, but years ago a I had a coworker who had recently graduated with a double Forestry/Wildlife major. One day he and his buddy came back to the office, laughing about the bear cubs they had seen in a tree. When Jeff, the wildlife grad told of climbing up a tree after them I commented about the wisdom of that stunt. "Oh", he said, "Adult bears can't climb trees." (Even if they couldn't, I don't advise POing the mother off of any species) Just a week later one of the Foresters came back from his weekly helicopter trip and told of watching a bear and her cubs in a poplar tree, breaking the tops off and eating the buds.
On bells and bears; in springtime my last dog used to wear a bell to warn all of the new mothers of her presence. One day we were walking down a winter road back to the truck... a startled bear ran off about 30 feet from us. So much for wearing a bell to alert the bears.
