Tameland fire

Interesting - - four years ago the wildfire - Strawberry Hill wildfire - that burned right up to my SW property line was just farmer's fields. It was called a wildfire. This large fire must be the reason its been hazy and kind of a slight burned smell here yesterday. Not the usual pine tree, sage bush, bunch grass smell - - it has the smell of hot burned dirt.

I wonder - - are you seeing any of this Bruce??

We report everything in our fire district...pastureland and wildland are pretty much synonymous here in north Texas. If we eliminated reported based on agricultural/ranching use of the land, we'd spend a lot less time on the computer.

I've heard (yes, way down here in Tassie) that there's been one fatality, a tractor operator with a burnt out tractor, in this fire. Apparently the operator was trying to create a fire-break.

I think that 'they' were calling it the 8 Mile Road fire.

:(

There was also a dozer operator fatality on the Fergusen fire near Yosemite in California: Firefighter fatality on the Ferguson Fire west of Yosemite National Park in California - Wildfire Today

Maybe we're lucky- there's been a mis-reporting and there's only one fatality.

I saw a lot of dozer work when I was a fire fighter. Some of those guys run real close to the fire. We had one come out of the smoke as we were preparing to get our tanker out of the path of the fire. He asked us to hose down his tracks to cool them off, then headed back in.

It's on the other side of the mountains from me, and downwind, so all I've seen is an occasional airliner-fire-bomber flying an unusual route.

But they have not brought in the 747 super tanker with its phenomenal load of spray water/foam. Reportly the cheapest most efficient fire fighting plane available.
Unlike the slug of water dropping planes/helos this thing sprays water at a rate that is similar to an rain forest drenching.

The videos of it are amazing.
