This is about a 2015 Mahindra 4025 4WD with front loader: The whole left front wheel including the splined axle just walked out of the left wheel drive while driving in the pasture. Running through the splined axle are three long bolts... about 5/16" in a triad pattern. Clearly all three had sheared right at the blunt end of the splined shaft. These bolts insert from inside the wheel drive mechanism and are shoved through toward the tire, and thread into the spline. That's all of what holds the wheel to the tractor.

Apparently, they had come loose and must have endured more and more shear rattle until they fatigued, maybe one at a time, but most likely all gave up pretty close together once one had sheared.

I bought it from the dealer in 2016 with 330 hours on it... I've only put about 100 hours on it in the 1.5 years I've had it. I'm just a home owner...use it for mowing and moving dirt. I was shredding when it felt like the left wheel had dropped down into a hole... then I saw the whole wheel, splined axle sticking straight up, come to a wobble stop next to my tractor. Called the dealer. They came out and hauled back to service (kind of tricky to winch a 3 wheel tractor on to a trailer). Apparently there is an "upgrade" with a single larger bolt through the splined rod, instead of three smaller bolts.

I don't have the tractor back yet, but I asked them to test the right wheel and see if it is loose. It was. While I think they put the upgraded spline with the single big bolt in the left wheel, all they told me they would do with the right wheel is tighten the bolts (I hope with lock tight!! this time).

They have not yet told me that Mahindra agrees that the right wheel work is "warranty" because it was not yet "diagnosed". The dealer also sounds like they want me to pay for pickup and delivery. I said NO because I couldn't even drive the tractor onto a trailer.

"Wheel falls off" sounds like a joke doesn't it? "I drive my cars till the wheels fall off" is what you say when you are talking about using it up. But a 2015 tractor with 400 hours shouldn't treat you with this experience of "the wheels fell off", I don't think.

So I welcome comments. Especially, what do you think I should do regarding:
1. Fix the right wheel with the upgrade since it is a known problem.
2. Whether I should have to pay for the expense of the tractor being picked up / delivered for warranty repair, where the tractor couldn't be loaded on a trailer.
3. Or anything else, like what do you think about having the wheel fall off.

Oh, I should say also that the Service Department at the dealer said that if I had had to pay for it instead of warranty repair, it would be $1200 per wheel !

As far as preventive maintenance, I think it is a good idea to periodically go over your tractor and tighten bolts to specified torque, but I can't imagine having to get inside complex assemblies to do it -- the wheel drive is not something you can easily and simply get inside of to just tighten bolts.

Without pictures it’s hard to fully understand what you are referencing. However, we had a discussion in the past and the “final drives” (someone may have the correct name-if that’s not it) are installed by the dealers. They arrive in the crate without them installed. Mine and others have been found to be lose and or have a broken bolt. Once I torqued mine with a proper torque wrench I haven’t had an issue.
Good luck and sorry it happened.

Warranty or not, you are liable for the pickup charges. Dealer should have had that discussion before he arrived at your location. I do, every time.

mmm 2 "Neumann"s with Mahindras with loose or "lose" wheels installed by dealers.

I would think that it is both a dealer problem and a faulty design since corrected.

On the
what do you think I should do regarding:
1. If the second neumann was able to torque his down then I would think the OP could do the same.
2. Dealers have different terms for warranty repair, most make you pay for transport some don't.
3. I think having a wheel fall off is a bad thing.

Selecting dealers and brands always involves tradeoffs of quality, service, and money.

It's too bad that Mahindra had a faulty design/assembly problem.

Same thing happened to my 4035 left side front sitting in the seat. Bolts broke shaft came out with tire. It was still under warranty but after they fixed it warranty ran out and it started leaking fluid. They fixed the leak or so they thought only to discover the housing was slightly warped and all that was on me. They replaced the housing and it’s been fine since but not the best setup, three small bolts.

OK, so here are some pictures:

IMG_2831.jpgIMG_2833.jpgIMG_2836.jpgIMG_2840.jpgIMG_2842.jpg
1. wheel drive still buried in dirt where it came to a stop. Left wheel with splined axle sticking toward us.
2. closer view of wheel.
3. closer view of wheel drive skidded into the dirt and the loose wheel next to it.
4. jacked up the wheel drive. Looking down into the wheel drive. You can see the three sheered bolts down inside the female splined drive mech.
5. close up of spllned axle and the three sheered bolt ends still stuck in the shaft.

You can see the edges of the blunt end of the splined axle is buggered up some. Obviously damaged a little because as the axle walked out, at the end it was barely in the drive when the whole weight of the tractor caused it to pop out.

I understand that this triple bolt method has been redesigned to entail a single center bolt of larger diameter. Not sure, but I think the dealer said they did the upgrade kit on this left wheel. On the right wheel, the bolts were loose....so a pending repeat of the disaster, but they said they tightened the bolts. (not sure I feel so permanent about that).

Supposed to get the tractor back day after tomorrow.

I still have 2 years left on warranty, so I hope any side-effect from this failure/repair is detectable before the warranty runs out. A warped wheel drive housing being "slightly warped" would be hard to see, and hard to pin the secondary damage due to the bolts sheering, on them (like if it was still under warranty). Do you remember what they charged to fix the fluid leak? Did they replace the housing or did they just "fix" the leak or bend the housing?

Yah I’m sure the dealer is fine and all but I’d take those bolts out, red locktite them and torque them with a torque wrench.

Looks like something you will have to check every 10 hours or so- grease, fluid levels, look over everything and torque those bolts.

Glad the dealer had a quick turn around for you!

Quick turn-around? I don't know what is the definition of "quick" with tractor dealers but the failure was around June 9...they picked it up with a winch trailer on June 19 (two guys from the dealer and I helped... difficult because of course one wheel missing), and now they've had it for more than a month. If I get it tomorrow (Monday) that's a total of about 45 days. Is that "quick" by those standards?

You say torque the bolts and red-locktite them. Well, the dealer did an upgrade on the left wheel so I shouldn't have to fool with it, and on the right wheel they claim they already tightened and presumably locktited them. But you suggest that I do that? It looks like I've got to jack up the wheel, remove the tire, then take out about 10 bolts that hold the wheel drive housing together, make a mess with all the fluid that's going to drain out, and then I hope the bolt heads are easy to get to... or what else do I have to take apart? It may involve more disassembly to get to the bolt heads...I don't know. Do this every 10 hours? Yikes! Surely you must think these bolts are somehow easily accessible, right? Or do you just love to be a tractor mechanic? Me? I don't even like to have to do oil change and filter replacements. I'd rather call a mobile tractor repair guy to come over and do maintenance if such a guy exists around here that isn't too busy.

My previous tractor was an old 1966 FORD 3000 series diesel. I used it for two years. THAT one I did expect I'd have to work on... I replaced the starter motor myself, replaced the fuel tank, the wiring harness, replaced hoses when they popped, took the FEL cylinders to the machine shop to redo the seals (seals wore out twice or thrice while I used that tractor), and had downtime pretty often due to this and that. Those experiences prompted me to sell the old tractor and get me a new one (well, slightly used 2015 tractor in year 2016... to me that was "new").

So you see, if my "new" tractor, this 4025, needs me to break down a front wheel drive every 10 hours to check the torque on bolts to keep the wheel from falling off, this tractor is worse than my 1966 tractor that cost 1/5 as much money! Please tell me you are thinking of checking the torque on lug nuts or something easy like that -- these bolts aren't just handy you see.

Thanks for your comments.

Check every 10 hours? You understand the bolts that failed are internal to the front final drive, right?
