This is about a 2015 Mahindra 4025 4WD with front loader: The whole left front wheel including the splined axle just walked out of the left wheel drive while driving in the pasture. Running through the splined axle are three long bolts... about 5/16" in a triad pattern. Clearly all three had sheared right at the blunt end of the splined shaft. These bolts insert from inside the wheel drive mechanism and are shoved through toward the tire, and thread into the spline. That's all of what holds the wheel to the tractor.
Apparently, they had come loose and must have endured more and more shear rattle until they fatigued, maybe one at a time, but most likely all gave up pretty close together once one had sheared.
I bought it from the dealer in 2016 with 330 hours on it... I've only put about 100 hours on it in the 1.5 years I've had it. I'm just a home owner...use it for mowing and moving dirt. I was shredding when it felt like the left wheel had dropped down into a hole... then I saw the whole wheel, splined axle sticking straight up, come to a wobble stop next to my tractor. Called the dealer. They came out and hauled back to service (kind of tricky to winch a 3 wheel tractor on to a trailer). Apparently there is an "upgrade" with a single larger bolt through the splined rod, instead of three smaller bolts.
I don't have the tractor back yet, but I asked them to test the right wheel and see if it is loose. It was. While I think they put the upgraded spline with the single big bolt in the left wheel, all they told me they would do with the right wheel is tighten the bolts (I hope with lock tight!! this time).
They have not yet told me that Mahindra agrees that the right wheel work is "warranty" because it was not yet "diagnosed". The dealer also sounds like they want me to pay for pickup and delivery. I said NO because I couldn't even drive the tractor onto a trailer.
"Wheel falls off" sounds like a joke doesn't it? "I drive my cars till the wheels fall off" is what you say when you are talking about using it up. But a 2015 tractor with 400 hours shouldn't treat you with this experience of "the wheels fell off", I don't think.
So I welcome comments. Especially, what do you think I should do regarding:
1. Fix the right wheel with the upgrade since it is a known problem.
2. Whether I should have to pay for the expense of the tractor being picked up / delivered for warranty repair, where the tractor couldn't be loaded on a trailer.
3. Or anything else, like what do you think about having the wheel fall off.
Oh, I should say also that the Service Department at the dealer said that if I had had to pay for it instead of warranty repair, it would be $1200 per wheel !
As far as preventive maintenance, I think it is a good idea to periodically go over your tractor and tighten bolts to specified torque, but I can't imagine having to get inside complex assemblies to do it -- the wheel drive is not something you can easily and simply get inside of to just tighten bolts.
