borrowed neighbors tractor and want to change oil and airfilter

I would use it gently and give him a gift certificate for oil and filters. Just imagine if something got screwed up, however unlikely, then you would own it and lose a friend.

Rotella would be fine. Go to Deere with the serial number and model for the correct filters. Hopefully the numbers will still be on the current ones, if so, match them.

You should be able to get the brand and part numbers off of the filters. Like boomer1025 said, if you don稚 know what specific oil that he uses the I wouldn稚 change it. You could buy him some filters.

Here are the factory filters:

Good advise. Not knowing what brand oil the owner uses coupled with not knowing if the tractor is due for an oil change makes it a bad idea to change it without the owner痴 knowledge.
Just because I may have let you use my tractor doesn稚 mean I want you wrenching on it. Use it, don稚 harm it, and bring it back.

This is a great idea. Perhaps add the cost of having a mechanic do it.

If your going to do it your self then once he has the gift certificate show up and help him go get the stuff and change them while he is watching. Such things can go wrong at no fault of your own. Change the oil and the something electrical goes wrong. Guess who gets the blame...........

Really neat of you to make the effort to repay him in some manner for the loan of the tractor.

The majority of people on this site are the type of guys who are very careful about maintenance of their equipment. That is a very good thing.

But there is another breed of equipment owner who doesn't give a rat's *** about maintenance. They feel like it should run, until it doesn't. Your friend could be one of those people.

If you told him you're going to change the oil and he's OK with it, do it. It might be the last oil change the machine sees! In all likelihood, if something unrelated goes wrong with the machine, it will be your fault either way.

I wouldn't want someone to change my oil and filters, but if they cleaned it up, maybe do a mini detail, give it back to him cleaner than you received it, and top off the tank.

Lucky you that you have a neighbour who loans pricy things out.

I am the type who beleves tool rental places have a place in this world so borrow one from them.

Since the owner of the tractor has never changed the oil, i doubt you are going to have to worry much about what oil he prefers. Sounds like you are doing the owner and tractor a favor. :)

I say don't do it without asking.
Your friendship is more important.
