New GC1720 Loud Drive

Yes axlehub i think this thread is off the rails.. I had 250 hrs on my 1710 when i sold it. Always serviced at the intervals by myself and always agco filters and permatran. Yes i noticed the permatran evolution as well. Just did the 50 hr service on my 1720 and it is still much noisier than my 1710 in low range. Definitely hydro whine and not the front axle. Im used to it at this point and with 50 hrs i have confidence in the machine so all is well.

Fxdb,

Sure I remember your prior postings. I assume you saved and inspected the fluid that came out of your front axle or any gear boxes.

What did you see in the front axle fluid. . Shinies - dirty fluid - any water separation - was the front axle filled to the top? Any grit or pieces at all in hydro fluid or front axle fluid?

No grit dirt or flakes from hydro or front diff. Front diff was almost new looking!

I find it interesting that posters continue to want to debate choices of synthetic engine oil or Dino ENGINE oil but don't want to look what the OP started out with as a concern. . . Hydro whine.

Recently once again I correlated the specifics the OP stated to a possibility that the front axle fluid either needed changing, or was low, or had some inferior product fluid in it. My point is whether the front axle had good quality Dino or synthetic would make little difference compared to dirty front axle fluid or low front axle fluid are very poor quality fluid.

The type of fluid is much less important than the Condition of the fluid or it's volume. But no one bothers to comment on such points made. Everybody just like to argue with no resultant benefits?

ENGINE oil doesn't relate to hydro whine. But the OP has quite a new gc1720 . . . any one but me recognize new units typically don't get this front ale fluid checked till a service timeframe???

Pretty sure the problem the OP has, if it is a problem, is a ewhine coming from the hydrostatic drive, not the front axle. I don't think there anything in the front axle that is turning fast enough to whine, especially in low range. You might hear a grinding noise if the gears or bearings are failing. If it whines when 4WD is engaged it is most likely because of the additional load on the hydrostatic transmission, not whine from the front axle itself.

langanobob,

actually, I was referring to the possibility that the front axle was increasing the hydro load when switched into 4wd. it would have been too easy for the operator to detect a front-of-unit whine compared to a rear hydro whine.

but increasing hydro load from the front axle added in 4wd li low gear see>?;med plausible?

What does front axle lube volume have to do with whine in hydrostatic drive transaxle low range even while in TWO WHEEL DRIVE only ... Discussion is still off the rails here....

These little tractors whine a little, how much someone thinks it whines and how much another person thinks it whines are two different things.. Post a video so we can tell you if it's normal or not..

DL,

I don't think the reasoning is even slightly complicated.

1. Whine was in low gear.

2. Whine was in 4wd.

3. The front axle in 4wd increases hydro strain and low gear is also where hydro strain is more likely an issue in a GC1700 (going up hills or heavy HP needs are typically done in low gear on a GC1700 series because high gear doesn't handle hills or higher HP strain.

4. Hydro whine is far more likely to happen under the 1, 2, and 3 points.

5. Hence any issues related to the front axle "condition" could
Create greater strain or drag. Those types of conditions could show themselves in a new front axle that had yet to be serviced - as low fluid or very dirty fluid, or small broken pieces.

I don't understand how someone with vast amounts of "situational experience" could not see the possible correlation. I also don't know why you are talking about 2 we as the OP clearly stated this whine was most noticed in 4wd and the primary difference in 2wd vs. 4wd is the front axle.

Come on DL, the logical progression is obvious.

naw, you got it all wrong the little guys don't whine, its their owners that whine!<smile>
