NOVI, Mich. (WXYZ) - Theyæ±*e red, have pincers that can draw blood and are quickly taking over a handful of Michigan ponds. The red swamp crayfish are in Michigan, and the fear is that they could be here to stay.

Known in southern states as a popular staple at crayfish boils, the red swamp crayfish sometimes referred to as a Louisiana crayfish (or crawfish when down South) won稚 be counting the Michigan DNR among those welcoming their discovery in Michigan. Reports of fishermen using the crayfish as bait have circulated since 2013, but last year marked the first time they were discovered in the wild. The amount found was cause for both shock and alarm.

Louisiana crayfish popular down South could be disastrous for Michigan - WXYZ.com

Another unwelcome immigrant. Hecky darn. We always called them crawdads...and they make good catfish bait.

Funny how a critter that is a delicacy in the South is considered an dangerous invasive nuisance in Michigan.

Whats the matter with the fish in MI - don't like good southern food. I have crayfish in my lake. Not many - but a few. Before I planted bass - I had quite a lot - not anymore. I'm pretty sure they are what make BIG bass.

Just a great food source for a lot of fish, birds and animals, and people.
I've caught them since I was a kid and never lost any blood..

DNR= dumb.

In the south they have natural predators. In new regions they are able to overpopulate and have an adverse affect on their environment, I/E, emerald ash borer.
Then again an invasive is partly a matter of perspective; I/E, earthworms, apples, and horses all came over 500+ years ago with the Europeans. And while earthworms are causing problems in places, even MotherEarthNews once replied to a reader's question about them; "Can you imagine not having worms to fish with?"

Most likely they are different subspecies, much as a smallmouth and largemouth bass are.

Even if so...it does not mean they would be less palatable...seems like it could open a new commercial fishery...
BTW...both types bass mentioned love them...as well as just about anything else that eats crustaceans...
