A 182, is impossible to beat as a great overall plane.

I would definitely own one, as well as a helicopter. (If I was single).

Unfortunately, my wife doesn't think we need either of them.

Back in the dark ages I held a pilot's license. I was a member of a flying club that owned 3 planes, a 150 acrobat, a 172, and an 182. I really enjoyed my time in the air. However, as kids came along & they wanted to ride [horses], in no time at all we owned 3 hay burners. Unfortunately, my income was finite & could not keep up, so I gradually stopped flying. And, that's the worst thing in the world if you want to stay proficient. My wife & I made one real trip - - I had a meeting in El Paso & once I got the go ahead from SWMBO set out to reserve the 182. It was already taken. How 'bout the 172 - - no go. So finally, we set out in the acrobat from Lakefront Airport, New Orleans to the far side of Texas. As I landed for gas various places the FBO would look at me & just shake his head. One of them gave my wife a set of ear plugs. I guess it was pretty loud in the cabin.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, but all that is behind me now.

However, could one of you current pilots explain how you navigate now that GPS is on the scene? It must be a world simpler than in my time.

It is pretty simple once you learn to program your route, or just go direct. Follow the magenta line and you’re there.
