When I worked for FNH, I got sick of replacing clutches on 1710's and 1715's with front end loaders and 4wd. Average lifespan was about 25 hours when used hard . On the other hand, I had it down to about an hour and a half if it had a loader on it to RandR. Split it and you'd see little cords of string that looked like a rat's nest. It was part of the clutch material that would disintergrate. If you cut a hole, find a busing to weld in it that matches the diameter of your hole.

Why would the clutches wear out so fast? Clutch material or crappy design?

Both and operator idiocy. Riding the clutch. The best solution was the 1720 hydrostat. Those clutches were tiny. You got a lot if pressure and abuse. People would reverse w/o stopping, would ride the clutch, would slip the clutch while loaded by changing gears etc. Torque converters and hydrostats are yhe best way to go with f.e. loaders unless the tractor is 80hp or over.

Hopefully I can make mine last a while. I would hate to split the tractor. Seems dangerous as **** if you dont know what your doing.

No. It's easy to split not too dangerous, just time consuming. Two trolley jacks and some wood blocks. Front axle shoud have a wood wedge driven on each side under the pivot stops before splitting so it doesn't flop when pulled apart. I've pulled the engine out of them in the field bare handed with the help of another guy and lifted it manually onto the back of a truck.

You would think they would make the clutch more accesible or use a torque converter like you said.

Do you by any chance know the height of the loader stands? I need to make loader stands to remove FEL.

Another option maybe to hang it. On my old farmall m I hung my loader off of rafters (2"×4") with 2in ratchet straps just fine.

Only motorcycles have easy-access clutches! Otherwise, cars, trucks, and tractors require some major disassembly (some cars require removing the engine!) At least you don't need a lift to change a tractor clutch, unlike most other four-wheeled vehicles; I hope to never change it on mine, but it appears that it would be an easy one-day job, with the biggest PITA being the zillion hoses that would need to be disconnected.

Except for BMW motorcycles, their built just like a tractor or at least they were up untill a few years ago when they finally got some smarts.
