Help me design a way to transport and lift this fuel transfer tank

I probably will fill it 5 times a year, so infrequently. And I don稚 have forks, and my grapple stays on my tractor, so it will have to be with a lifting sling or chain. So the only question is how to attach it to the tank or to be made, tank frame. The sticker on the tank warns not to pick it up when full by the rings, so I would be afraid to do that (although I値l bet it would work fine) but don稚 want to risk dropping it and damaging my tank or truck. As far as it swaying as it dangles from whatever, I知 not worried about that. I lift my other implements all the time to load them, some much bigger and heavier.

And I don稚 want to weld to the tank. It has diesel in it and my welding skills are minimal. It I知 good enough to weld a frame if need be.

I agree increasing the footprint to make it more stable during transport is a good idea.
Build a pallet and wood cage for it big enough so you can clamp on it with your grapple. Or do they build clamp on pallet forks for grapples?

I have a tool box on my truck. Leaving it on there all the time would be very much in my way. Plus there are long periods of time that I don’t use my tractor. I want to leave this tank at my farm in the shed, not where I live.

I really would not use forks. I never handle material or pallets. Plus my grapple is bolted on my loader ( no skid steer mount) and I don’t want to have to change it just to occasionally move this tank. I use lifting straps all the time to move rotary cutters, box blades etc. So I’m perfectly comfortable doing that. Yes they swing and sway, but as long as I go slow, it’s safe. Plus I’m only moving it a few feet. But that’s one reason I thought about making a metal “cage” that would both increase the footprint, add some protection, and give me something to attach a chain or strap to. There’s no concrete, so no use for wheels. Where I place it is where it will stay.

Use some steel angle and build a cage for it to set in with the bottom having a wider foot print for a bit more stability. You can have four pieces of angle for up rights that wrap each corner of the tank , then make a rectangular piece to wrap the top and bolts to the uprights. Use a piece of chain bolted to the top piece on each end that way it’s always with it. Pull your grapple over it , throw the chain over a few teeth and lift it into your truck. If your welding skills are not great this whole thing can be done by bolting the pieces of angle together even.

Mount 2 pieces of 4" channel iron under the ends for feet and bolted to the tank, then put 1 d-ring on each of the channel ends. Then lift it with 2 strap slings.

If the gas station is only a few miles why not just run the tractor down and fill it, thats what I do.

Yep, that’s similar to what I was thinking. I went to the scrap yard today looking for some materials. Thanks for the ideas. And I’m a good enough welder to do that. Plus it good practice.

As far as driving my tractor, the closest station is more like 6 miles away. I really don’t like driving on highways. Plus it seems like I only have short windows of time so I prefer to have diesel on hand. I already have the manual pump and filtration system installed. 40 gallons would last a good while at my rate of use.

Will you fill the tank while it's on the carrier in the back of your truck?
I picked up an old aluminum cylindrical tank and it's on my projects list to build it a carrier; I'm concerned about legality of filling it in the back of my truck (I doubt it's actually unsafe given how explosive diesel isn't).

This seems to depend on your locality. I've seen guys with IBC totes in the back of their truck at the gas station in Mississippi. Filled up half way and drove off with it sloshing like it was going to tip over.

What's the difference between this or a diesel tank mounted in your bed like all farmers do?
