PTO truning when off on JD 4500

PTO will continue to turn with switch off. Not able to stop with hand pressure. Not sure if its the switch or something more serious. Any recommendations before send to a repair shop?

Here is a pic of the theory of operation.. may help you understand what may be going on.

Sounds like a check of the PTO solenoid is in order. Because I'm seeing it in the service tech manual, have added that test of the PTO solenoid (parts of two pages)

Reading the theory of operation post by beenthere (thanks) it sounds like your PTO solenoid is staying engaged. It could be still energized or stuck in the engaged position.

Unplug the PTO solenoid, then see if the PTO stops. If not, it's not the switch.

The clutch disc brake pads are broke and or shattered.
My 4700 does the same thing.
It made a ratcheting clicking sound a few months b4 finally quieting up.
I suspect the parts fell into bottom of trans housing. IDK. I never tore into it.

There are a couple of problems with solenoid operated PTO's;
1) depending on design the engagement can be harsh on light loads
2) when being shut down on high inertia loads such as brush hogs or generators the brake gets a lot of use and wear

Although not usually deemed necessary an overrunning clutch will save a lot of wear on the pto braking system.

Most ppl Engage or Disengage Elc PTO at way too many eng rpm imho
