My brother and I cut, split and stack at least 10 cord of tree length firewood for two elderly people in the area, we have been doing so for at least ten years and have never taken a dime from either of them, we do it because we like to work outdoors and they need the help..

I’m sure everyone reports the income from a weekend project.

Ya right..

There is no need for state or government involvement, we have enough of that in life as it is..

If someone sent my payment for a neighborly job with a 1099 they might as well not pay at all because we ain’t going to be friends after that.

I suggested $500 cash because that is what the job would be worth to me, that's all.. If he hired an electric company to come in and do the job he would have had to pay a lot more than that..

If he hands the guy $500 and he takes the whole $500 and says thank you, he has paid the man and still has a good neighbor that doesn't think he is cheap, if he hands some of the money back he will be just as happy of a neighbor. The $500 cash is good either way and the OP got the job done cheap no matter which way you look at it..
OP here.
The above is pretty much how I figure it- locally it would have cost me probably close to $3000 all in, due to the skilled labor shortage here (just north of Portland), so I saved anywhere between $1000 and $2000. I'll hand him $500 cash and if it is too much he'll give me back what he considers excess. If he keeps it all, I still saved a bundle and he's a happy camper.

By the way, I had it inspected today and passed with flying colors. My friend did 90% of the work and I acted as his assistant. I am capable of doing the job, but realistically it is was easier to do it himself than watch me work at a newbie pace. He knew exactly what he was doing and it still took seven hours.

So, I'm happy, the hazardous Federal Pacific panel is gone and I have a generator interlock so I can power my whole house directly.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

Sounds good! Let us know how the interaction turns out.

Glad it all went well with the inspector.

Someone who volunteers to help, then expects to get paid, isnt a friend...

That’s also true. But if you agree to help a neighbor for pay and then they 1099 you there’re no friend either.
