Looks like a young Rat Snake. I find them around here all the time. Nice to have around. How long is that one? I just chased one off my back patio two days ago that was about 4-5 feet long. No pics but I do have a video. Can't figure out how to post it on here.

Thanks guys. Yes, I agree it痴 not poisonous, therefore no need to fear it. But convincing her of this may be impossible. Every snake she sees is a rattlesnake. She痴 notoriously paranoid. Her house in in upstate SC, at the foothills of the mountains. And of course, timber rattlers and copperheads live there, but this snake is neither. Thats one reason I wanted to prove to her that she is wrong. Im just having a hard time identifying it based on these limited pictures. She killed it with her walking cane on her front steps. Of course, it frightened her as she walked out her front door.

I'll say this for your sister. She know's how to handle a walking cane. Most folks need a cotton hoe to do that much damage.

I've not seen any of those rat snakes around here. Just black rat snakes, a couple weeks ago a black racer, and a king snake. I know we have copper heads, garter's, water moccasins, and cotton mouths, and the occasional rattler including the spreading nadder or hognose. Funny story. Heard a radio preacher state that the only way he handles a snake is with a shotgun or hoe handle.
