Mowing with a mmm do you mow over your grass clippings?

My "grass" dies around mid-July and comes back around mid-October - with the fall rains. I've got a never ending supply of water and when we first moved here - I would water all summer. Looking back - I laugh. Mid-July would come - I'd be out there watering and I'd have dead, tan, wet, field grass. No amount of watering will keep the field grass from dying in mid-July.

I hear the trick with grass clumps if you don't want to rake them is make your initial cut, and then raise the mower deck 1/4 in and mow the area in a different direction. That way you are disbursing the clumps and not re-cutting the grass.

I mow often enough that I generally don't get clumps, but with all the wet weather, I recently tried the above and it works great.

I mow every weekend and still have a mess of grass! like others have said all the rain has been crazy.

on my ZTR mower, I raised the discharge chute about half way and wired it in place so the clippings were dispersed rather than laid down in a row and just left them. (I know - "safety violation!"). I generally mowed straight lines back and forth so sometimes I was re-mowing the clippings but with them dispersed it was hardly noticeable.
I had 3 1/2 acres of ex-pasture.

The discharge chutes are always all of the way up (or removed) on all of my mowers.

I keep trying to explain to my wife that here in the PNW we have "cool-season grass". And, as you know it doesn't matter how much water you give it in the summertime, it's going to turn brown.

Mow counter clockwise, with that stupid chute that makes windrows and won't fit close to anything, removed, so the grass is properly distributed and not windrowed. Almost always at the highest mowing setting, never lower than 3.5 of 4 on the knob. Never water, fertilize of spray anything toxic on it. Never remove the clippings, though if they are particularly heavy, I'll mow them again to chop them up better. I also mow once for about every 6 times the neighbors do who scalp their yards.

Now I know someone will safe that's not safe, but at the same time, they make their yards an unhealthy toxic dump of chemical fertilizers and weed killers and let their kids play on it, go figure.

I can mow counter clockwise, clockwise or back and forth. With Hustler's rear discharge it doesn't matter. No grass thrown into garden or flower beds, on driveways or against buildings. Can't mulch or bag, but no need to.

Same here....it lays the clippings out there better.

I took it off mine. I’m going to try to get one that I can open and close from the seat because I really need one sometimes but those stupid rubber flaps are unusable. The manufacturer should be ashamed. I got one of these from a Dixie chopper that I plan on mounting on my Grasshopper. IMG_0111.JPG
