Would you put fuel off the truck in your tractor?

around here a lot of the construction companies have fuel truck fill their equipment at job sites. This is the same delivery truck that also fills farm tanks so doubt there would be any problem other than the fuel nozzle on the truck might not fit into the filler neck on your tractor. Some of those nozzles are pretty good sized.

Farmers get their tractors filled off the truck a lot in some areas. Some of those tractors hold upwards of 400 gallons and may have more than one tractor in the field, so it wouldn't be unusual for a fuel truck to pump a 1000 gallon while setting in a farmers field.

I found some time to fill the tractor, and the truck hasn't arrived yet. Aside from the filtration, there is probably a mix of winter/summer in the tank along with additives, so I figured that was my best bet. I may or may not use the tractor much and don't want to find myself in the cold weather with straight summer fuel in the tractor tank, lines and filters. That is the thing, I never really know what the fuel consistency is in my tanks at any given time. I guess if it gells, I know it's too heavy.

Thanks for the replies.

Go for it.

I get my 300 gallon tank on a stand in the barn filled in the fall so I know it's a cold weather blend. I still add in Power Service white bottle & a biocide as a precaution. My tank ran dry 2 months ago or so, think it lasted me almost a year & a half. I've been filling my new bed mount 36 gallon tank & using that for now. Lazy is combined with waiting for fall & cold blend fuel.

There used to be a guy on TBN called dieselpower or something that used to respond to all these questions. I am not an expert in this field, but here goes my .02. I have home heating oil delivered to my house all the time. WHile they are there, I have them fill up the tank in my garage for my tractor. I used it in my tractor for 11 years, never had an issue. I always add power service to it to add lubricity, they pump some in my tank and I dump the recommended amount in, then they top off the tank (effectively stirring it up). We don't get bio diesel, we get that ULSD dyed for home use. The guy that delivers it to me is the son of the guy that I used to work for at a gas station/home heating oil delivery place (he took over the company). I talked to him after getting my new tractor and he saw no issue with me running it in my tractor. In my area, the winter blend mainly just gets kerosene added to it and some other chemicals. I was also told to stop putting diesel/HHO in metal containers. I asked him about that and he said we don't get bio diesel, and no trade magazine he has read has said to stop putting it in metal containers. In fact, almost everyone he delivers fuel to has a metal 275 gallon tank or tanks. All my tanks are indoors.

Having said all of that, do your own due diligence. As a side note, the truck has a filter, my tanks have a filter, and my tractor has a filter.

Just like you, I get home heating oil delivered. With the company I have, they only deliver ULSD dyed for home use. I'm in Lancaster and I'll just add additive to my tank for peace of mind. And since that's what my tractor is rated for, I figure I should be good to go.. And it's almost a $1 cheaper a gallon. I believe ULSD is rated at 15ppm if I remember correctly, but don't quote me on that.. And home heating oil is something crazy like 500,000ppm? Hence why all the soot around many furnaces. I'll have to look it up.

When you say that you are filling your bulk tanks, can we assume that you mean they are for diesel? (My father had a habit of running heating oil in his Kubota, until the dealer told him to stop.)
EVERY place I've been, heating oil is the SAME fuel as tractor diesel....UNLESS your heating oil is straight #1 and even THAT is fine to run, if you add a little 2 stroke oil to it.

Thanks, PAh! That got me to thinking. (me research junkie) It seems that that caveats regarding particular metals mention Zinc as the worst thing about metal in diesel storage. Seems that fittings might be ok, but zinc lines or tank coatings can be problematic, esp with Hydrated fuels or water contamination.

I agree with all who suggest that one less 'transfer' is one less opportunity to contaminate fuel. t o g
