That was my original point. I had the 6.5 bug for a while, then I asked myself.. you want a proven caliber, that is easy to buy off the shelf, easy to find reloading components, easy to find brass, and has tons of bullet options for. Why am I making it hard?
As I was experimenting with bullet type, weight, construction, and manufacturer for accuracy, I quickly found that I was going to try lots of combinations to get the type of accuracy I wanted, and I wanted it in a hunting bullet.
My rifle didn't like Sierra, or Nosler, but loved Hornady. It didn't like 165/8 gr, but loved 150 SST.. Ladder testing proved it. I am looking at how far I can responsibly take game, and under what conditions.
Right now I am smacking 6" steel at 350yds pretty easily, unless it is windy. My ballistic max range is around 550yds according to the bullet manufacturer, and If I cannot hit a 10" circle every time with a cold barrel, I need to get closer..
You cannot simply switch target ammo for hunting ammo and keep a zero..
But those are my needs, and not what anyone else does.. Yes, I wanted the newest sports car, but I bought the F150 cause it works for me.
I also bought a .223 for the same reason, and love it! I don't hunt deer with it, but would not hesitate if I needed to, You just need to get close, and precise with the right bullet. It is just a fun varmint gun. VERY cheap to shoot, and find stuff for.
