Cheap bolt action rifles for son

Ironically I was jus on Graf looking at once fired range brass. No 6.5 Grr but there was 6.5CM and 7.62*39.

Bullets for 7.62*39 (communist 30) are .310 but .309-.312 is common. US 30-30, 300blk, 308 win all use 308 diameter bullets

Some of the barrels for 7.62*39 have a 308 groove diameter. Your experience may vary.

That was my original point. I had the 6.5 bug for a while, then I asked myself.. you want a proven caliber, that is easy to buy off the shelf, easy to find reloading components, easy to find brass, and has tons of bullet options for. Why am I making it hard?

As I was experimenting with bullet type, weight, construction, and manufacturer for accuracy, I quickly found that I was going to try lots of combinations to get the type of accuracy I wanted, and I wanted it in a hunting bullet.

My rifle didn't like Sierra, or Nosler, but loved Hornady. It didn't like 165/8 gr, but loved 150 SST.. Ladder testing proved it. I am looking at how far I can responsibly take game, and under what conditions.

Right now I am smacking 6" steel at 350yds pretty easily, unless it is windy. My ballistic max range is around 550yds according to the bullet manufacturer, and If I cannot hit a 10" circle every time with a cold barrel, I need to get closer..

You cannot simply switch target ammo for hunting ammo and keep a zero..

But those are my needs, and not what anyone else does.. Yes, I wanted the newest sports car, but I bought the F150 cause it works for me.

I also bought a .223 for the same reason, and love it! I don't hunt deer with it, but would not hesitate if I needed to, You just need to get close, and precise with the right bullet. It is just a fun varmint gun. VERY cheap to shoot, and find stuff for.

A few years ago I bought a Ruger .243 with a Bushnell scope. For me, I sighted it in, I've only shot it about 10 times but it's highly accurate. To me, I just can't see shooting over and over once I have it dialed in.
My thought would be why not two guns, something like that and a .22LR. Once the 243 is sighted in, then to shoot a lot for fun use a 22. Bullets are cheap.

Yes. Agree 100%.

I've started reloading for my .270 win, so I might try some light Varget over 100 gr Speer Varmint bullets. For anyone recommending .270 or .30-06 for youth, when was the last time you ran 50 rounds through one. Doesn't hurt, but really isn't much fun, IMO.

I also ordered one of the Rural King $33 AR lowers today. Not sure weather I want to build it into a .223, .300 BO, or 7.62x39, but I'm leaning towards .223 right now.

Depending on the weight of the rifle, it could be fun, just may not hurt but isn't much fun, or it could hurt and isn't much fun as well.

I have a 300 win mag that is fun to shoot even after 50 rounds, but I woudn't want to be hiking miles with it because hauling it isn't fun LOL

First "rifle" I shot was a depression era 16 gauge plastic (very light weight) single shot shotgun (still have it, prized possession for memories). That thing kicked like a mule, and I was SCARED to death to shoot a 12 gauge after hearing that it was a "bigger" round. Finally shot my one uncle's 12 gauge, and the thing was more fun to shoot that that 16 gauge I was shooting (just remember thinking the gun was going to take my shoulder off and was like "huh?" after shooting it).

Your depression era "plastic" shotgun has me intrigued. I wasn't aware that there were any synthetic stocks of any kind made until maybe the late 1950's or '60's. I know that there were some military stocks made from Bakelite earlier than that though.

I know one thing, the old single shots kicked like a mule any way, and if the stock did not fit you well, like being a bit too long, it would rattle your teeth and destroy your shoulder. I had a new light weight double; first time crow hunting, my shoulder was black from my ear to my elbow.

From then on, I had all my guns fitted by a gunsmith and a Pachymeyer White Line recoil pad installed. Made a world of difference in the recoil, at least that amount transferred to your shoulder.

I am surprised how a light single shot 20 ga feels compared to a 12 ga pump. Heck, target load 12 ga with heavier gun, and recoil pad, are about the same as 3" .410 from a Yildiz .410 single (3.5 lbs, hard plastic butt plate).

I shot some 130 gr Speer SP on 43.0 gr Varget last night, and it felt pretty mild, and didn't get gun smoking hot. I know the 52.0 gr CFE223 on 100 gr Speer Varmints gets you smelling HOT wood after 10 shots over 5 minutes. I really wanted to get some H4895 and load some "Youth" 60% min loads (~30 gr) per Hodgdons H4895 reduced loads. I would guess your hitting 6.5 Grendel load equivalent. But, cant find any H4895 around here

Look into Midsouth Shooters supply. Nice prices, and great selection. I shoot H4895 out of my bolt. It seems to like the 55 grain offerings.. very accurate out to 400+yds, unless the wind is blowing, then forget it.
