Hello all,
I purchased a front end brush cutter that's rated for 9-16 GPM. My Mahindra puts out 9 GPM so I knew it would not be powerful as it could be. Used it today for the first time and it did do real good job, just had to go slow.
So I searched for PTO pumps and found a lot of them for sale, but I'm unsure how it hooks up. Can you bypass the factory pump only when needed? Or does it have to have it's own reservoir?
Any other info like someones build, detailed instructions or even a company that makes a pre assembled unit would be great. I previously came across a 3 pt mounted self contained unit but I think it was very expensive, and I cant even find it again.
Thanks!
James

Heres how most are set up. One good example would be a backhoe like xfaxman said.

Reservoir --> pump --> valve (quick attach for different operations possibly) -->return line to reservoir

You need a oil tank on it. I think you could get by without a valve. Just turn off the pto when you don’t want it to run.

You can't use just "any" valve/lines/fittings, they have to be sized for the flow of the pump or all you will be doing is making a lot of heat, AND you need a big enough oil tank to get rid of the heat you will be making because of friction.

I like the idea of just turning the PTO off and on when needed, keeps it simple. But what if the brush cutter bogs down or stops completely on thick brush? Could that cause a hose to blow if there's no pressure relief bypass valve? I could keep my hand on the PTO.
Is Prince Hydraulics RD1800 relief valve a good option (I can't provide a link until I have 3 posts but easy enough to search :)

Check on what psi you need to run the brush cutter. Some cutters require 3000 psi and lots of CUTS put out between 2000-2500. Nine gallons at 2000 psi is WAY different than 16 gal at 3000 psi. Put a grin on your face different.

I would make up or buy a kit with a 50 gal reservoir and cooling, mounted on the 3pt for good ballast and less chance of over heating.

As far as a kit goes I think Global Industries had one.

50 gallon? How about 10-15?

10-15 If you are running about 5-10 gpm. Rule of thumb for mobile hydraulics is 1.5-2 times the flow of the pump for tank size

Typical design is 2X pump gpm with a cooler.
My PTO 20 GPM Prince pump has a 15 gallon tank and it works just fine with NO heat issues, so I'm sure 20 gallons would be plenty IF all the piping, valves and hoses are sized for a 20 gallon pump.

IF not, then there will be a lot more heat in the system to get rid of...

Motors create a whole lot more heat than running a few cylinders. Do your homework (sizing components) before you start spending $$$.
You'll end up with a great mower.

You should also have a cross over relief between lines so when you kill the PTO the mower doesn't have to stop instantly. That can over pressure the lines or cause other damage.

Just occurred to me that the cutter may already have the crossover built in to it.
