I know mine does. I suspect something close to this is happening, but she (my wife who insists I don't try to do laundry) never calls for any assistance?
Does your washing machine sound like it may self destruct?

I had one where the suspension spring mounts broke loose.
$50 worth of parts and it was all good!
Interesting was that the tub "mass" was a ring of concrete.
Now I could have done that!

Thanks for posting, I found that very entertaining. My LG washer has a load sensing feature which detects imbalance and spins back and forth a few revolutions to distribute the load inside before spinning up to high speed. It won't spin up if it can't get the wet clothes to spread out inside.
During that initial load distribution phase it does bang around and the sound is unsettling. And the load distribution that it achieves isn't always perfect. Sometimes at high speed it sounds like it wants to be a drummer in a metalcore band. I thought there was something wrong with it at first and I called tech support. They told me it was normal. I didn't believe them but I figured I had covered my bases and continued using it that way. It's been doing that for 7 years and still holds up just fine.
The washer in the video probably had a similar load sensing and distribution feature but they've bypassed all the electronics (as made evident when it puked all the circuit boards and kept on running) and they appear to be directly powering the motor from a variac (visible to the right of the screen for a few frames near the end) at probably double the rated voltage.

Our Kenmore shakes and vibrates and sounds like a broken machine unless you lean on it when it's spinning. And I wouldn't mind that so much if it would just sit still instead of trying to walk around.

Yep, and the rubber wore off the original ones, so now we have some little rubber cups that the feet sit in.

I had to search for the original video of this phenomena... it has been copied several times. I was in tears both the first time I saw it long ago, and recently when my wife and I were in bed watching the tube and I had to bring up how unbelievably loud the washer was. Yes, I think you are right strantor they hardwired the motor and drive belts and used a variac to bring up the speed. LOL I was surprised at how long it lasted.

I replaced the pump on this washer - a penny took a big chunk out of the housing and $100.00 later I was back up and running. I think I'll open it up and take a look. - weren't those famous last words somewhere?
