Must have tools/equipment for a new tractor owner

Not a must-have but a handy multi-purpose thing: a 16" one of these. Seems like I'm always trying to align pins with holes or holes with holes, or need something stout but skinny to stick in the loop on the top link. This and a regular crescent wrench make a good pair.

[edit to add] Chain hooks for the loader bucket. I'm fond of the BXpanded clip-ons for light duty.

I got bolt on hooks for my old L3200 & they worked good for what they were. I stopped using them because I got SSQA pallet forks. You have to wrangle chain a little more carefully, but there are so many pieces of bar stock on the fork frame it's easy to hook on anywhere. The excess chain that would normally hang free on the slack side of the bucket hook can be wrapped around the fork or frame before you put the hook on the chain on the frame somewhere.

I'm sure I use my pallet forks a fair bit more than my bucket.

What is a "diesel air compressor"?
Sorry that was my private addition. It should probably be removed. In general the air compressor for tire inflation and blowing out the dust filter. I added diesel to it as that is what I prefer.

Spud Wrench.... I keep one on the tractor.. perfect for three point hook up adjustments

I'll add some too:

Tape Measure: Used to verify proper centering of rear attachments.
Tire pressure gauge: Should be obvious why
4' level: Rotary cutter swivel arm adjustment verification

optional:
Battery Tender Junior: $25 battery maintainer for off-season or if you use tractor for short time periods. I have had very good experience with them and they seem to extend the battery life.

Just some things that come to mind.

Read with interest. Y'all did good! Possible additions:

1) PB Blaster or some other penetrating fluid. Use it all the time on my 3-point attachment to prevent rust on connections.

2) A come-along. Poor mans winch. You'll eventually need to un-stuck yourself.

3) A bottle jack rated for tractor weight. You'll eventually need to lift that rear axle. Don't go over kill or it'll take forever to crank anything up.

4) A decent wire welder for up to 1/4" steel. Besides adding reinforcements and chain hooks, it can make a lot of repairs.

5) A half gallon of slime in each tire.

6) A HD torque wrench as others have said. Loader attachment bolts need 90 ft/lbs. A lock washer squishes at about 20. Can't trust a visual inspection. Learned this the hard way!

Have fun, Bob

Pretty much agree with what everyone else has said but I'll add one thing to the list... Grease rags, keep one or two in your tool box on the tractor and a bunch in the garage.

What he said... I go through so many paper towels/rags when working around my equipment. I have started to use latex gloves.. Works great until my hands sweat

If this keeps going we will of course be on record saying an elaborate dealer-level tractor repair shop is "Must Have." So let me add ...

1) A Lock N Lube grease gun coupler -- if you are around tractors and do your diligence using a grease gun you will get so frustrated and hacked off that it adversely affects your lube habits. Half the time the grease squirts out somewhere other than where it is needed or intended. The gun tip won't stay on the zerk, etc., etc. This little gadget seems very overpriced at $30 and once you buy it you will never be without it again.

2) I guess it is so "Duh" that it goes without saying but ... & Maybe it was assumed somewhere in the last 39 posts but (obviously) you need a good socket set with both metric and English sockets with size ranges that cover anything on the machine. Also obvious are things like every home shop has like vise, basic tools, etc.

3) On and on ... post #39 by Cavjock22 is probably overkill. "It Depends..." on what you plan to do with the machine, what your applications are, is it just a hobby or does your business depend on it, etc. I quit.

p.s.: I forgot -- a really good battery charger.
