Looking for a zero turn.

You are just looking to buy a new toy. Why did you buy a BX23 with MMM if you don't want to use it?

Believe me chief, if I was looking for a "new toy", it **** sure wouldn't be a lawn mower. I bought the BX used over 10 years ago, and it had the 60" MMM. I removed it immediately because I didn't buy it for cutting grass. (See original post...have only been in THIS house a year). I use it in a field I have but it's hard to maneuver in the rest of the property because of the width of the mower. Why did you even reply?

That BX will hold up a whole lot better than an entry level zero turn.

Guys, I bought the BX to use the loader and backhoe. The MMM came with it. Never needed it until I bought the house I'm currently in. That BX destroyed the hydro pump last fall with only 450 hours on it. How? One the followers contact the squash plate snapped off. Why? No one could tell me. The original owner had it dealer maintained. I had the dealer service it twice, and kept all the fluids topped off, etc. It was never abused. I USE THE BX. I just prefer not cutting grass with it.

If you are looking at a zero turn vs lawn tractor, I would highly recommend the zero turn. You will save yourself a ton of time. I mowed my 5 acres with a 46" Craftsman tractor in 4 hours. Bought a 54" Hustler Raptor SD for $3800 and cut the mowing down to 2 hours. Great mower with ZT-2800 hydros which can be serviced. Nice quality cut. Try a zero turn before you buy anything. I wish I had bought one years ago. Takes about an hour to get the hang of driving with levers vs steering wheel, but once you master it, you can fly. I recently traded in my Raptor SD for a 60" X-One, and cut my mowing time in half again. As I get older, my time becomes more valuable!

I purposely bought my BX with the plan to buy a dedicated mower later as my mowing needs increased. Sure glad I did. If you need the ground clearance with your tractor then you get to wrestle with the MMM. I don't want to do that every couple weeks or month, let alone once a year.

Buy a ZT not from a box store and be happy! I often use my tractor and my ZT the same weekend. Sell the MMM and put it towards your mower. I 'settled' for a Kubota gas ZT as a diesel I could not justify for my patch. Consider it a long term use tool and buy a bit more quality than your budget. You will thank yourself later.

I’ve got a 72” zero turn. It beats my F series Kubota 60” cut by quite a bit and at least twice as fast as my 50” cut ZTR. The F series is faster than my dads 60” mmm.

The Goundsmaster that I have is built like the F series Kubota. They are not as fast as a zero turn but I have very steep and rough ground to mow. The greater speed of the zero turn is reduced somewhat by rough or steep terrain of which I have both. I picked up this unit for $3K. So far I have replaced an alternator belt and bought some different blades. Doesn't use any oil and cuts great. I like it.

I am following this thread as I am in about the same place as the OP. I bought an old JD855 with the MMM and do not want to deal with mounting and demounting it. I have a Husqvarna 48" rider but it is a pain to use with the two dozen or so trees I have on my 1 1/2 acre lawn (the JD would be even worse!). It takes me 90 minutes to cut and 1/2 hour to weed whip. I can probably do it in 45 minutes with a ZT with 15 minutes to weed whip.

I cut the grass about 12-15 times a year...so call it 12 machine hours a year on a ZT. If the "junk" residential ZT's are good for 300 hours (I hope?) I will get 25 years out of one. I am in my late 60's. so that will last my lifetime....or close to it. I will never put 1000 hours on a ZT.

I have a guy who will cut my grass for $70...so if I use him it will cost about $850-1000 a year. I can pay back a low end ZT in about three years, and a better ZT in 6 years.


My first question is, "How long will the low end ZT's last?" And the second is, "What would it cost to replace the hydro unit when it fails?"

In my circumstances, I doubt I can justify a $6k machine, if the "junk" residential ZT's are good for 300 hours.

You are probably OK with any machine if you are looking at only 12 hours of use annually. I would personally look at the lowest cost unit I could find with a 2800 Hydro Gear serviceable unit and fabricated deck with local support. Compare that cost with a stamped deck and sealed hydro unit. I would suspect the cost difference to be between $1K-$2K.

My son purchased a Bobcat zero turn for around $4200. It has the Hydro Gear 2800 fully serviceable hydro units and fabricated 48" deck. He has a small yard of about 3/4 of an acre. I doubt he will ever wear it out at his current residence. He works at a local golf course and uses commercial grade mowing equipment all the time. I trust his experience and knowledge.

I had a 2005 Husqvarna Z4217, bought new. I sold it this year with 249 hours on it, still ran fine. The only trouble I ever had was a few front flats I ultimately fixed with slime, and a float bowl overflow. That was an easy fix also. I never had to replace a belt, wore out a few sets of blades. Serviced it myself every fall. I bought this place five years ago and the mower was a little small, so replaced it with the 54" Fastrak rear discharge. I spent the extra for the Fastrak because it was the least expensive rear discharge available here. I was tired of having to avoid throwing grass on this and that, and it's frequently windy here; grass was usually all over me at the end of mowing. Not any more.

Front mount mowers are awesome dedicated mowers. I bought a JD F725 for my wife. She said she wanted to start helping with the mowing since I have cleared and grassed more land. It will turn in a circle just like my old zero turn would and rides and drives ten times better. I would love to have a bigger diesel version but this one will have to do. You still have the dirt and dust to deal with in dry weather.

I mow most of my place with a 72" finish mower and it is a huge improvement over the old 50" zero turn I had. It was fast but beat me to death and for some reason it blew dirt out the front that came back all over me. The rear discharge finish mower almost eliminates any dust concerns.
