Just level with us. If we give you bad advice, do we need to be worried?

OP: wishing you good luck with your engine issue, & that no serious damage was done

reading through your maintenance description, i would strongly suggest that for future oil/ fluid related changes, you have it done by a reputable mechanic with OEM filters. no point in risking serious damage again. best regards

I think now that she has trained herself your advice does not sound like you want to be a friend. Changing the oil in a tractor for the first time is something 100% of us have done if we change our own oil. Some people can learn their way forward regardless what others may think. Old men can and do make mistakes even when they know better. :)

my apology to OP, although learning an oil change that way can be costly. perhaps that's what friends are for, as a 2nd pair of eyes on a task like that. no ill feelings intended regardless of gender

The lesson to remember is when you discover any engine is low on oil, just don't run the engine for any reason. Shut it off immediately and add oil as required.

That is good advice but something I did not adhere to at one time.

As a kid in 1967 I changed oil in my 1961 Chevy with a 348 engine. Someday later I was parking with my sweetheart in a cornfield and when it came time to go the oil light was on and the engine was started clattering from low oil. I noticed the plug was missing :eek: so it must have been finger tight and vibrated out over time. I don't remember all the details but I remember dumping a couple quarts from my trunk into the engine figuring it would run till I got home. Still without the plug in, go figure. I thought it would pour over the tappets etc. and lubricate it enough for a half hour. :confused3::confused3:

Home was about 5 miles away so I would give it the gas to about 70 MPH then shut the motor off till I almost stopped from coasting. I would fire it up and repeat a number of times but through town I could only wind it up to 35 and shut it down and coast and repeat. I eventually got home and took my girlfriend home with my parents car. The next day I put a new plug in and filled the oil to the full mark. Then the rattling and clattering stopped. I ran that car another 2-3 years with no problems even cross country until I traded it in for a different one. That is my oil plug story and know I dodged a mighty big bullet on that one. It was an interesting time being a dumb kid.

Of course I would not try that with a nice tractor today.

Years ago a service station up the road changed an older guy's oil in this car. He drove it a couple miles and because it was knocking he turned around and drove back to the station. The oil set out to do the job was still unopened. They told the customer what happened and that they had coverage for the accident.

The guy insisted they just pour in the oil and let him drive it. He was local and said the car ran fine so he did not want the engine opened up for no reason.

I expect when we start up a truck or tractor that has been setting for 6 months we do more engine damage than was done in this case.

Since you knew what the problem was why didn’t you stick a rag or something in the hole?

Let me see, being young, and parking in a cornfield with sweetheart, any chance he had a severe case of thinking with the wrong head ? LOL
