What kind of bird house/nest is this?

Do you have to clean out the gourds when the season is over?

What height approx are yours hung?

I take them down in the Fall. Rehang them in mid February. Clean them each time.

PMs send scouts North early in the season looking for nest sites. I have saw them here in late February. I'm on the Missouri/Iowa line.

My nests are 12-15 feet high.

A mockingbird simply repeats what it has heard. A PM has it's own vocabulary with a wide range.

They eat small flying insects such as mosquitos, gnats, etc.

Yes it is.

You'll never have a more friendly, social, glad to see you colony of birds in your yard. There is nothing negative about them.

Be patient. May take 2 or 3 years to develop a colony. It's worth the wait.

When I was kid we had a purple martin house in the back yard and those birds would dive bomb us kids. Scared the cr@p out of us.....lol...later my mom, who was in the Audubon club and hated to see the house sparrows and starlings try to take away the nest boxes, would let us pop off the invasive birds with our air rifles.

Yep. They don't like pets wandering around the nests either.

I built a 12 nest, two story wooden nest box 20 years ago. Invasive birds such as sparrows loved it. Created a highaintenance environment. The gourds stopped that.
