Per: Ford F-150 Cab & bed leave chassis crash! - The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum that truck was going around 100MPH (stolen, in a police chase) when the driver lost control spun around and hit a Camaro going ~50MPH in the other direction with the truck's rear bumper.
With a 150MPH closing speed and a rear end collision, I am not surprised.

I see the 2017 wheels that I have yet to install on our 2010 F-150 are not good for high speed crashes.

It is amazing how much safer all vehicles are today as shown in this extreme case of a PU made out of used beer cans.

I was rear ended when I was driving the Plymouth valiant sporting my homemade hitch...
ZERO damaged to my Plymouth... the Fiat was totaled... the hitch went thought the fiat radiator and collapsed/crumpled the Fiat...

I was driving through Bangor hitting every light as it turned red, and watching the heating service van behind trying to force me to run them. I knew it was a matter of time before he hit me; sure enough, he did. I got out, saw there was no damage to my truck while a big pool of antifreeze formed under his. I said "I don't want to report this, do you?" When he said no I jumped into my truck and took off just as the light turned yellow. From the amount of antifreeze under his work van I doubt that he went very far before parking it or calling a wrecker.

Coolant leaks are often fixable.

Stupidity often isn't.

I remember reading that UPS pushes their drivers for something like 6 - 8 seconds of cushion. A soon as you try that timing (obviously not bumper/bumper rush hour...)...... it's a lot more distance than most people would guess.

I bumped into a 4" tree at less than walking speed with my 08 "HEAVY DUTY" Sierra and sustained $6000.00 in damage. What a flimsy piece of garbage! All that worthless chrome plated plastic bling, and the only chrome plated steel is the less than soup can thickness bumpers.

Funny how a "while" ago, people knew how to make bumpers that absorbed low speed energy, and survived just fine.....

Guess we're too "smart" to understand that now.....

I loved those energy absorbing bumpers on our 72 Delta 88.

In 1986 I collided with a 1986 Jetta in my 1972 Jimmy. You could not find a scratch on the Jimmy, but the Jetta suffered $1900 damage (roughly $4500 today?).

High speed head on collision the Jimmy might fare better, but I doubt the passengers/driver would.

All the fancy stuff breaking up is one thing, but when it's serious you care more about the potential damage to humans.

A lot of advances have been made in the last 40 years for sure..... but that 100+50mph crash result in the picture definitely has "idiot with xy sets of horseshoes up his _____ " in play too....

The low-speed stuff is just a "Who Pays" deal, IMO.

Consumers loved that era of car bumper. Low speed ding, the shocks on the bumper cycled in/out, and you often didn't even have a scratch (actual chromed steel bumper, for younger readers :thumbsup.

Modern bumpers - cheap, often unfinished raw metal impact bar, with something like styrofoam used, for a one-time event. They pass the standards, for one low-speed hit.

Vehicle manufacturers get to put out a marginally cheaper design; consumers get much higher repair bills for low-speed accidents.

On the truck side, I think these are a good idea for a rxer hitch, old or new.....

I have a bookmark somewhere for a slighty different design..... but same idea, re-useable energy absorbing rxer add-on.
