We just bought a hillside in the northwest. Neglected; huge piles of yard waste, blackberries, settling soil, fallen trees, etc. I'm worried about driving a tractor due to the slopes although my JD lawn mowr does just fine. So is having a tractor on 2 acres overkill?

Allow me to answer for everyone. No.

I have 1.5 acres, and couldn’t of done without my subcompact Massey TLB. 248 hours and 14 months of ownership. This is just a small fraction of action shots. Also have a log splitter and generator for it as well. IMG_5190.JPGIMG_4027.JPGIMG_5989.JPGIMG_5992.JPGIMG_5994.JPGIMG_3532.JPGIMG_3150.JPG

Reminds me of my brother-in-law. Had a part-time job at a large, local farm when he was in high school. One afternoon, my mother-in-law, who lives in a subdivision on 1/3 acre lot, sees this HUGE articulated tractor drive past her house and there's her son driving. He proceeds to plow the vacant 1/4 acre lot next to them in two passes and leaves. Later that afternoon he came back and planted 1/4 acre of cabbage left over he got from the farmer. Had a grand idea to sell that cabbage for profit. Well, come fall, he sold a couple head, but most of it started to rot after the first frost and stunk up the entire subdivision..... rotting cabbage.

As to your original question, we have a small machine that we use here on our 1 acre lot. 60" finish mower, a couple buckets, a power angle 60" snow blade, pallet forks. Really handy to be able to mow the lawn in 20 minutes, move landscaping material, firewood, work in the garden, etc... we also take it out to our remote property to maintain the trails with a 48" brush cutter, and to gather firewood to bring home. And we used to maintain a Little League park with 4 ball diamonds and the wife's church ball diamond with it as well. And do some small jobs for friends and family.

So the answer to your question(s) is what type of jobs do you need to do, what type of machine do you need to do those jobs, how much time do you have to do those jobs, and what size machine can you afford on your budget? Then you need to adjust the size to your time budget and money budget to find a happy medium.

Overkill? Here’s what I bought for my 2 acre lot. IMG_0311.JPG Jokes aside I really do live on about 2 acres and the backhoe is mine, but I use it for more work than that. Unless you plow snow how much work do you really have for a tractor? I used my tractor a lot when I was building but after the projects were done the tractor didn’t get used much at the house. Buying a tractor is probably more economical than renting a machine for several weekends but selling it after the work done is probably a wise financial idea unless you need it for some reoccurring task.

I live on a 2acre sloped parcel down to the salt water and have a Kubota B21 and would not want to be without it. I have a slope as you do and you DO WANT A WIDE STANCE. I am adding spacers to mine, I have been on three wheels more than I care to. I have much larger properties with larger tractors on less sloped land, one pancake flat, no issues there. A slope changes things but you still want a tractor, just get a low wide one. Selection of tires/wheels is important. How much slope?

1.5 acres here with a steep slope. BX has been a godsend. Yep, added spacers. Lot's of pics to show you when I get a chance, but let's just say blackberries to small stumps beware. Bigger ones if you are patient.
