Who Uses CB Radios?

IIRC there is some type of additional coupler and or coil behind the glove box...the antenna is something like a 40" steel whip think it might have in the windshield wire too...

All of those built in factory antennas on vehicles were "compromise" antennas.

What did they do for an effective antenna?

I tried various Antenna Specialists Disquise CB antennas back in the day with poor results.

Yes, very poor results.

I'm using a Larson NMO-27 Magnet Mount, because it's something I had, but doing some reading, those expensive CB antennas Like Wilson, outperform it by a good margin.

And a 1/4 wave whip, if it is mounted up high will outperform both by a pretty good margin. Of course, aesthetics is another matter.

I have some of those around somewhere, and the five pound springs. There wouldn't be anything sturdy enough on my HD Sierra to bolt it to! I guess, the trailer hitch, maybe!

If that kid leaned on my Sierra, there would probably be a dent in it.

Speaking of CB users/abusers, back in the 70's in Northern Cali I worked as a radio specialist for an unnamed military service. We had 10Kw HF transmitters that tuned 2-30 Mhz coupled with steerable log periodic antennas. I would monitor the CB channels on the old R390 receiver and sure enough there was a guy with a large linear amplifier claiming to be the "net control" for Northern California. Well, you can guess what happened next. I ran direction finder and aimed one of the log periodic antennas to his heading and lit him up with the full 10KW. I never heard him again. I always figured I blew out the front end of his receiver. Never found a use for cb's...
