Thanks for that. I remember the CBers that claimed advantage by dipping the front wheels into a body of water.

I spoke with a fellow friend/ham this morning. He reminded me of his Jag, that has a factory CH 19 Monitor button on the stereo.

Several cars from "back in the day" could have factory integrated CB radio into the entertainment system. Sure solved the "where do I put it" problem

What did they do for an effective antenna?

I tried various Antenna Specialists Disquise CB antennas back in the day with poor results.

If you would like to really learn about mobile HF radio and all of its in's and outs, the site below is considered an "authority" on the subject.

In the 70s and 80s, we had CBs in pickup and truck for comm between vehicles mostly, but also good for speed trap info. On the boat, we had VHF 25W unit, with 6 or so channels. Coast guard tried to locate folks one time on ocean without success because even on low (4W) setting, the signal was too strong to determine direction (north or south on coast line, could have solved it if folks had been able to go west a few miles so they were not inline with two stations)... fun times..

IIRC there is some type of additional coupler and or coil behind the glove box...the antenna is something like a 40" steel whip think it might have in the windshield wire too...

I have a HT in my truck. Need to get my mobile 70cm 2m installed sometime. For now I use HAM frequencies, as I have enough towers in range. There are simplex frequencies for 70cm and 2m that HAMs often use for direct communication, they do vary by location sometimes. I haven't used them much.

I just see no reason for that anymore. Nor my repeater. In a Civil emergency it might be useful, except that too many repeaters are being linked with the Internet. Bad Idea!

I prefer to talk with friends (even hams) on the telephone, private (except for the Guberment) full duplex and we can talk about almost anything.

Ham friends of mine are developing all this P25 stuff, but never use it! Kind of weird to spend all that time and money.

Just curious since the vehicle is on rubber, why you could not insulate

Carbon black is a very good conductor of electricity, and tires with it (you know, black tires?) make poor insulators. Some tires also have a zone of especially low-resistance rubber to further increase conductivity ("antenna strip").

If tires were as insulating as most people thing they are, you'd probably get killed by the static shock upon leaving the car after a drive.

The reason why being in a car in a lightning storm is safer than being outside is that as long as you're inside the car when it gets hit by lightning, the car shell will carry the current to ground without you getting fried... the car will still get hit.
