Tractor
Yanmar f17d
So I have now had a chance to get a little seat time on my new to me F17D and so far have found it to be pretty capable for a small tractor.
I have yet to use anything other then the 4 ft Box Scraper attached to the 3 point. I am wondering if a 5ft'er would not be a better tool. The tractor seems to have plenty of power to pull one but maybe its just my limited use of a 4 footer fooling me. The reason is that I reversed my rear wheels and my my overall rear wheels are 51.5 inches wide so the box does not fully cover the full tractor width. Its not a big deal but just something I noticed.

Now my next question is what are the best PTO accessories/attachments for this tractor. I am interested in a brush hog and would prefer to use a 5ft but think a 4ft'er is probably recommend. Same for a tiller, in fact a tiller might be more demanding than a brush hog but I have no actual experience so I am just putting it out there. I am also looking at Post hole diggers but think I will be fine with a standard duty up to 12" diameter.

Some other things I would like are a landscape rake and Hiller as I have about a 1/4 acre garden plot and I plan on getting the most from my new to me tractor.

So in general I am just researching my future plans and needs to get the best use and benefit out of my investment. I know that there are not many owners of the same F17d tractors on this forum but I am sure that its comparable to many other similar Yanmar models as to how much a 21hp/17Pto unit can actually handle.

I think 4 footer in box blade, mower, and tiller would be the right size. :2cents:

Nothing personal but that is a pretty generic answer. Looking for more actual hands on reasons from folks who have tried larger and where disappointed and regretted there choice or found using slightly larger implements acceptable.

I do understand that size dependent on many factors such as intended use and my intended uses will be moderate and not heavy duty. I kind of want the best of both worlds with bigger being preferred but only if my tractor can handle it.

On a side note is my tractor F17d considered a subcompact or compact, seems to me to be sorta in between.

I'll give a little more detail but same opinion. Yours is a little smaller than my old 2002D. I ran a 5' brush hog, 51" tiller, and 54" box blade. All three were a load. Yours is 3 pto hp less. Sounds to me that you are wanting to go with the larger implements and you might but my opinion is they would be a little large for you.

4 ft implements. Unless you mow every few weeks you will have trouble turning a 5ft bush hog in grass of much height. I would think you could use a 5ft tiller way before a 5 ft hog. My experience has been that the tiller does not take much power. You can literally idle them into the soil, if you wanted to go that slow for some reason, it just doesn't work as well slower.

I also have a 20hp PTO tractor. I have a 5ft bush hog and it's all it wants in thicker taller stuff, medium stuff it's almost too much, I also have a 4ft bush hog but I don't use it anymore cause I can handle the 5. I hAve used a 48" tiller on a 20hp PTO tractor and it handled it fine. I also have used a post hole digger with my tractor a d it did it fine. I also have a 48" box blade. If you can get all 4 rippers sunk it's all you want esp if you fill the box. I think I could get away with a 5fter but it would hang out past tires and catch easier, and when filling the box and cutting would be a load pissible.

Interesting,I would have thought that the tiller would use more power. My gut tells me I would be better off with mostly 4ft attachments too but if a deal should come along on something larger I just want to keep my options open.
It seems the closest similar Yanmar to mine is the YM17002D as it appears to be just one generation older and has the same engine specs.

Thanks for the feedback,

Yea I would still use 4 if I were him. I have 3 more hp. We all have different soils which all have different characteristics. I am more of a clay soil which I would think would take more HP than a say or loam soil. I'm not heavy heavy clay but closer to that than anything else.

BUT yea I can till easily at 1500rpm, way less load than bush hogging knee deep grass at 1500rpm!

4Ft. bush hog. 4'B. Blade 5'FM. for me. My Fm. gets used Wkly. Rear discharge. so my 2000 handles it with ease. I run 2nd. gear PTO. with it, it's that easy. Be careful like clemsonfor said about the overhang. 4' is perfect for me but the JD.I used and it's BB does overhang and I mean almost Ft. each side and it's real easy to catch things. Trust me!! Even Knowing it and still happens. I used a Yanmar tiller for yrs.. I bought from Fredricks and it was sweet!! Worked easily. And pic's also of my attachments. Notice the width to the rear wheels.

SWEET setup Careyo63.

wannabeefree,

I would agree. 4ft is so much better to control and operate. I have a bigger Yanmar than most here, and I still choose the 4ft box blade and bush hog. I have a King Cutter 6ft disc harrow, it works really nice because it's just discs that rotate. Got a 5ft straight flat blade too. This way, when grading, the rear wheel tracks are covered. :)

A 4ft tiller would be supreme. There are guys in the area making $50 a pop on garden tilling for people. A 4ft tiller is great to navigate tight areas and to swing around too. The same goes for bush hogging. $50 per flat acre is the rate here and $65 for slightly rolling fields. BUT, the rolling fields need a 3PT 'draft' control on the Yanmar like the JD knock-offs have. Zero-turns can't knock down grass over a foot high, but a CUT tractor can!

FYI, to keep all the HP avail in your F17D, use 10W30 oil vs. the thick 15W40. See the thread here on Yanmar oils. This way, you Yanni isn't sluggish with the Hp trying to move the oil around vs. getting the work done.
