Ya' Know What Torques Me Off?

After having some major hardships in life, having to press "english" is not something that comes close to getting me excited.
Yep, here we have to press 1 to speak New Jersey....

Depending on the topic, I appreciate videos. If I want to learn how to replace my brake pads and rotors, a video is worth a thousand words.

Maybe even 10,000. I love you tube links. At least if the link is to a worthwhile video.

I particularly enjoy the "Eyehandy" videos... some of which I've watched several times just to, ahhh, make sure I understood all of the procedures!

(Yeah... the 'procedures'... that's the ticket!)

I had never heard of that. Now my YouTube feed is going to be all perved up. I guess we all have our hardships to bear!

It is very hard to write technical instructions. Too long and people can't or don't want to follow. Too short, and stuff is missing. Videos are great. You can stress important stuff much better.

^^^ But you can't print them out on paper to take out to the shed, and you can't highlight certain words or phrases. And it isn't as easy to review the points you need and discard those you don't.

Often I find that if I scribble down stuff, I can understand it better. For starters, I don't need the safety stuff or all the obvious stuff. Now, give it a day or two and my own scribbles will be meaningless to even me.

I want help pages in words and pictures. Ones that are 'to the point' and not self serving trying to rack up reference link clicks. Words and pictures take less time to post and don't eat bandwidth for people that seek information.

I'm on the fence on this. Like Diggin It I prefer step by step instructions, but there are times that a procedure doesn't translate well to words, or uses unfamiliar terminology that a video can make things a lot clearer. Then again, a grainy cell phone video where the person holding the camera can't keep it still, and every 3rd word is "uh" maybe not. It depends.

Very true. It can be quite a PITA to keep running back & forth between the computer in the house and where you're trying to work, hands all greasy re-watching that video step by step. The dinky little screens on cellphones (assuming you have one and want to get it all grungy using it while you work) generally don't show enough detail.

The rotissery thingy went out on my microwave; didn't have a clue. Looked up a video, and it was short and sweet. Ordered a new motor and had it installed in about 45 minutes. I scored big on that one.

I know I have saved a bundle of money by not having to pay for a service call etc. on an appliance or an auto repair...because I could find a "tube" that addressed the exact problems and showed how to make the repair or replace a part(s)...

Another way they save money is by revealing the root of a problem prior and preventing non professionals from replacing a lot of parts that really (come to find out later) didn't need replacing :D

Sometimes like on my Sierra, there appear to be a number of places that GM puts certain modules, like Onstar or wireless remote receiver. This can be difficult to get to the information you need and much of it completely and worse than useless.
