Planning on dropping Health Insurance. Change my mind.

I came real close to dropping mine YESTERDAY..
I cut my finger off last month which required an emergency room visit.. They sewed it back on & it works..
I got a bill for 577.00.. insurance paid 40.00.!!!! but the bill was "reduced" by 1800.00 because I "HAVE" insurance.. Total was 2475.00
I called & raised HOLY H3LL.. They said "all that money went towards your deductible".. I knew that sentence was coming BEFORE I picked up the phone.. & u cant argue w/ them.. so whats the use in calling?? I just wrote the check & put it in the lose colume..

My wife and I are planning now for our retirement...
I will have insurance at 62 but she will not...
We have set aside enough funds to get her insurance when she retires at 62...
Right now I am figuring 1K per month but I don't know if that will be adequate in 3 years...
Who knows...

I say total bill was $2475! That seems ridiculously low by today's cost. Go have a tooth pulled by an Oral Surgeon and see what that cost!! About half of having a finger reattached, I guess.

You have to know how your insurance works. almost all insurance has deductibles, the higher the deductible, the lower your premiums. Just like for your cars.

My insurance has a website, i know exactly how much deductible i have to pay before the insurance pays. I hit my $4000 deductible the first week of this yr.

When comparing insurance, i add and compare full premiums plus full deductible. In most cases you come out ahead with high deductible plans.

My neighbors wife is in that situation and I think she pays $1300 a month. Are you going to work past 62 to keep insurance?

The cost of insurance can exceed the cost of rent especially when you are just shy of Medicare age...

Plenty keep working in large part to keep insurance... and it may not even be for them but for a spouse.

When Mom was 62 she was attacked by a Pitbull... she had just retired with COBRA... the injury made her uninsurable until she was Medicare Age...

LOL.. THATS what I told the ER billing lady.. she wanted to know if I needed to "set-up" a payment plan.??
I laughed & said, NO. I'll just write u a check AFTER I get intouch w/ my ins. company..
I expected atleast a 3k bill.. BUT when it was broken down, the ins. co ONLY PAID 40.00.!!!! ON a 3K bill..
& THAT was for a tetnus shot..!!!
