If someone doesn't want to put their location in their profile, that's their business. If they ask a specific question that somehow requires a location, well, then, someone will ask them "Hey bud, whereabouts are you located?"

There are so many microclimates, soil types, altitudes, huge bodies of water, etc... in such close proximity to each other that sometimes location doesn't help.

This is reminding me of the commercial with the dog team. "If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes". To maintain harmony - The COG may walk a step ahead of the COF. It will cover a lot more than just the view too. Lots of red beans & ham with raw onions piled on all this week. I am PRIME this week. Don't even TOUCH one of my fingers.

I don't hide my location, there is no need to.
With all of the data bases out there for anyone to use including government GIS system
which will not only provide a name, an address, a map view, a satellite view, the assessed value and the taxes and when they were paid,
how much you paid for the property and when.
and then the various sites to plug in a name or phone number and a complete history is available.
I also am a firm believer in Mr. Remington and Mr. Browning and a few other associated friends.

IMO, not showing location by even country or hemisphere is often a troll's signature. (No drones above here, c'mon over ...)

Just my $0.025, if someone doesn't want to list a location, either in their profile or on a specific post where it may be relevant, that's on them. If it means they only get half or a quarter or one tenth the responses, so be it.

Regarding data mining - yes, it is mind blowing.

Lots of people use the same username on many forums. You can be sure that all even similar usernames are "examined" by both human as well as non-human routines, and all sorts of things put together (whether factual or not).

I used to typically use my first initial and last name as a username. But my last name is unique enough that if someone searched for it, even just in "Vermont" you would find out quite a bit about my position and actual residential address. Not really what I want on a forum that is open to the general public.

I'm not sure why I am concerned with it... UPS can't even find my house.

UPS doesn't even have our address (all packages are delivered to our business).

We don't get mail at our house (we have a PO Box).

I believe it would be pretty hard for the average person to find out where we live. But, there are a lot of non-average "people" out there...
