Dangerous times even in small town

A few mornings in a row, I would wake up to a gun shot then a phone call. Grandparents lived across the road and up the hill from us. The call would consist of Woodchuck 1, grandpa nothing. Next day was Woodchuck 2, grandpa nothing. Third morning was Woodchuck 3, grandpa nothing.

At this point I was pretty irritated about getting woken up an hour earlier then normal.

The fourth morning, I popped the Woodchuck at 100 yards with my 30-30 before grandpa got out there.

I shot one when I was about 14 (seems like a lifetime ago) from 75 yards with a .22 Woodsman pistol. One shot, one kill.

My single six got swapped in for a Ruger Mark II stainless with 5 inch bull barrel. Best move I ever made. 10's of thousands of rounds thru the MKII so far. One very sweet shooting reliable accurate pistol. Hundreds of women got introduced to handgunning thru that little pistol. I figure about 600

I will take the single six for cleaning alone over the Mark series LMFAO.

Ruger firearms is a lot like Yuengling Beer. I talked to Richard Yuengling (not Dick his son) years ago and he swore they would never make a light beer. I talked to Ruger firearms over the phone and asked why they have such an assinine stripping process, and they told it was Bill's original design and it would never change.

Yuengling now makes a light beer and Ruger decided to make the field stripping process easier by changing the series.

I think the recall is a lot older than that. I bought my new model single six in 1975.
The recall is for guns made pre-1973. 30 years was from an article which another poster linked to.

I have one of each, sans the bull barrel. The single six is fun to shoot but I carry the Mark II as it's much easier to reload. I used to shoot a lot of grouse each fall, but the population is down so I'm lucky to get 3-4 per year. (I used to shoot that many in a good day.)

Not a ground hog, no way. With a pistol?

Ground hog with a .22 Colt Woodsman pistol at 75 yards. We shot all of our groundhogs with pistols. After graduating from my original .22 single shot rifle, at about 14, I never took it out any more, I and all of my family were all pistolero's. Why take a rifle if you can get the job done with a handgun? Rifles are for shooting after 125 yards or so. My wife and I used to go to the range all the time with our Ruger Redhawk .44magnum stainless 5 inch and shoot the rams at 125 yards. It can be done and we did it.

Way. I am old and fat, but I can still shoot with a handgun. Come on down, and I will take you to a range and show you. Heck I will even bring the handguns. You just bring yourself and any money you wish to wager. Would a water filled 1 gallon milk jug be a good analogue for a groundhog at 75 yards in your mind? If so I will provide the jugs. When I lived in Willard Mo, I had a good range at the house, and milkjugs with the .44 magnum at 125 yards were easy peasy. I will tell you something else you may not believe. Sometimes with correct lighting conditions (shaded target area so kinda dark, and lighted flight path) you can actually see the bullets in flight on their way to the target. Yep, I can see bullets.,

My dad is a better pistol shot than I am. I’ve seen him hit 12” piece of steel 5/6 times repeatedly with a snub nose 44 magnum free hand. Swap the snub nose for something more suitable for long range and hitting a groundhog at 75 yard especially with something to rest against is easily doable. I could shoot 3” and on a good day 2” groups with my Thompson contender 22 hornet pistol off bags with a scope on it.

While walking thru knee high grass looking for a snake I had a buzzard fall out of a tree on my head. I fired five or six shots from at 22 H&R revolver from about three feet and missed it ever time. As a matter of fact I think I fired the first time before the pistol cleared the holster. The hole in the holster kinda indicated that I was exited.

Hint, buzzards can projectile vomit at least five feet. Luckily I had a ten foot limb I poked it with.

We responded to a fight in progress -shots fired. Before we arrived the dispatcher advised that the fight had moved across the street from the original reported location.

On arrival we saw a Hispanic male who was on top of a large pile of dirt and concrete ruble from a construction site. Appeared to be on his knees, revolver in his right hand and he appeared to be firing toward the dirt. He would raise the gun and bring it down to fire. Looking closer we could see he had a black man pinned on the dirt pile. The Hispanic man fired 2-3 possibly more times like that but when he realized the cops were there he stopped firing, go up and started walking slowly toward us.

My partner had a shotgun and I was carrying a 9mm S&W Model 19. With my gun drawn I approached the Hispanic man and commanded that he drop his weapon. Which he immediately did. I had him him put his hands up and kneel down. Which he did. I walked up to him and cuffed him.

During this time the black man had gotten up and attempted to flee but was stopped and apprehended by my partner and other officers.

Long story short the black man had attempted to rob some Hispanic people in a laundromat across the street and unfortunately for him they had guns too.

At least one person was shot in the laundromat. The Hispanic man chased the black man outside and across the street and caught up to him at the dirt pile. Evidently, adrenaline took hold and he had been firing into the air as he was slinging his gun at the guy while holding him down. I always thought he actually intended to shoot the would be robber but was just so excited that he couldn’t react effectively. Lucky for the robber. Both the robber and the Hispanic man were armed with .38 short barreled revolvers.

There were several shots fired in the laundromat by the robber and the victim who was shot. The victim was only shot once and recovered to testify.

There is a lot of adrenaline and emotion flowing when bullets are flying.

That was almost 40 years ago. Training is a lot different now.
