Propane Tank - What to do

I'm thinking, 4th of July, open the top valve and light it up!
You may want to rig up some kind of remote flare if doing that so that when the fire department gets there you can shut it off...

Look for a liquid port with some type valve. Some tanks have this feature. Use it to fill your small tanks. You can also hook up a small tank placed in an ice/water bath and the vapor will condense in the small tank. The warmer the day the faster it goes. DO NOT OVERFILL. carefully check weight as it fills. Propane is 4.2# at 60 degrees F. There are charts on line that show eight at different temperatures. Colder it densifies and weighs more.

That’s probably a lifetime of bbq grill gas. I’d probably be looking for a different approach if the tank is an eyesore.

Buy a propane car or convert yours. Lol.

Find a pro to buy the gas and the tank (for a reasonable price) and be done with it.

Before I decided anything I would find the last test date stamp on the tank.
Most areas require a retest every ten years on tanks.
Without a valid test date many outfits will not fill a tank.
I don't know the latest Texas regs on homeowner tanks.

if its a horizontal above ground tank it is an ASME vessel and no re-certifications are required per NFPA 58. it does however have to be in good condition well painted with little or no rust. Vertical cylinders ( DOT ) need to be certified ASME does not.

Someone with a little experience might attempt this...NOT me.

There is a big tree growing next to the tank that's actually rocking it. A wrong stress point on that big tank could cause it to crack.

The walls of that propane tank are in the neighborhood of 3/8" thick. I don't think a tree bumping it will cause a stress crack.

If you can't find a reasonable use for the propane then I would sell it back to a propane company along with the tank. If you have any use for it on your own then I would keep it. I would consider moving it to a more acceptable spot on your yard.

If you are losing sleep over it then get rid of it. I don't think you are in any immediate danger if the tank is in good shape but it's not worth stressing over.

All good advice which sums it up rather well. All that's left is for the O.P. to make a decision.

I asked about an adapter to fill the 20lb bottles from my 500 gallon tank. I was told one was something like $600 and had to be installed by them.

If there is a tree endangering it, one of them needs to be moved. OP's choice as to which.
