AARP benefits ???

They do not spend a lot of money advertising.
Most of their advertising is on the radio.

I heard about them over 10 years ago. I said something to my wife about us joining and of course it was my idea so she said no.
When she was getting ready to retire she heard about it from her friends at work and came home telling me all about it.

I kinda have to keep up our membership, since we still have our health insurance (medicare supplement) through the city from which I retired, and that's the plan we have. So our health insurance is through AARP while our home owner and auto insurance are through AAA. So far I haven't been able to beat AAA for those two. But I do like to glance through the AARP magazines, even though I figure our traveling days are over.

I know it DID require membership several years ago, or at least the city's insurance folks SAID it did, but I was already a member anyway. But now . . . I don't know whether anything has changed or not; just assumed that it was still necessary.

As a retirement benefit, I get a subsidy for the AARP Supplemental insurance and I had to join AARP to get that. Although I have issues with AARP political positions and lobbying, I think I come out money ahead on other discounts.

Do you dine out? A lot? Are you of retirement age? Do you ask for senior discounts when and if you shop?

Check around. Use an independent agent. I had AAA for a while until they got so high I had to change. Went to Farm Bureau for a while then moved to Grange and now SafeCo. Every time I moved, I cut my premiums by nearly half. SafeCo is on the rise now, so I'm on the hunt again.

Well, that sounds about right.

I DO check around. As with many, if not most, folks, you usually get a little discount of some kind if you have both home owner and auto insurance with the same company. So IF those two come due at different times, it can be a bit inconvenient. So this past year, I told my AAA folks that I wanted both to expire/come due at the same time. The local insurance guy first told me there was no way he could change one to match the other. So I told I knew better than that and if necessary I could change companies. So the office manager took over and got it done. I know it wasn't necessary, but it's just a little more convenient for me, and a little easier to compare rates. I've been satisfied with AAA, but if I find I can get the same, or better, coverage for less money elsewhere, I'll certainly do it.

Not being a hard core proponent of either side I am not a member of any group.

AARP started spamming me at 50 and finally gave up when I hadn't joined by 65. Good riddance!

Discounts are available for the searching and asking.

I have my home and vehicles with Farm Bureau.

I guess I lied about not being a member of any group. Membership is required for FB. I guess I'm a member of the electric co-op too.

My health insurance is with the same HMO I had while I was working. They had the most affordable plan. Hope it works okay if we need any surgery. I think our max out of pocket for a year is three grand.
