Yes, those are even easier if that crosshole position is long enough. It may take a bigger lathe to accommodate the wire handle within the headstock. Depends on the lathe chuck.

To be clear, you would have the full 5/8" for strength and a smaller diameter just thru the nut.

I still think your most simple 'fix' would be to chase the threads on both the nuts and pins, maybe several times, maybe with cutting oil to make the pins easier to thread in/out. No alterations to cause warranty/service/safety issues.
