Dumb Battery Question.

   / Dumb Battery Question. #21
I like the Rural King Heavy Duty/Commercial batteries. They are made by Exide so there should be other branded labels out there besides RK's. I like them since they are made a little tougher, stronger case, and built to withstand more vibrations (plates) and abuse. I realize these are marketing claims, but they are comparing to their other batteries.

I measured the battery room I had, then bought a size 65 AGM battery from Autozone which fit. I used a 25% off coupon I found on the web. My original battery had 700cca, the replacement has 750cca. The agm batteries are suppose to hold up to rough service and vibration better. So far I'm happy. It's now almost 3 years old. I've read that Johnson Control makes them to high standards.

This is true, but these manufacturers run also batch-making so that they'll make batch for so & so often to their specs, the single most important factor in pricing is LEAD, so if you see a battery that is substantially cheaper chances are that the lead in the cells will be a lot less than in the more expensive one.

Which is why one indicator of battery quality is the weight of the battery. (It's not the ONLY indicator, however)

I read through this thread and learned a lot about batteries and battery life, including the excellent link provided by DL Meisen.

I'm still trying to figure out what the "dumb question" was.

Ustacould put in a disconnect for those long down times so there was no load on the battery. With all the electronical gadgets and whatnots now, does that harm the machines?

People still do that, and no, it does not harm the various gadgets. However, since many tractors have no "always-on" loads, you may find that it makes no difference whether the battery is connected or not. Also, all batteries self-discharge over time, even with no external load. So your battery will eventually drain. AGM batteries are known for having a lower self-discharge rate than conventional flooded lead-acid batteries.

in a limited size, you can have thicker plates for ruggedness, and longevity, OR, you can have thin, and more plates for more AH, and CCA..

There is one more component, seldom mentioned by battery manufacturers and that is "Purity of Lead"

Now that this is mainly (or entirely?) being imported, I wonder how pure it is compared to batteries years ago.
