Building FEL hay spear, have a question

/ Building FEL hay spear, have a question #31
Maybe I am not very educated about bail spears (and maybe pallet forks) , but if you have a lot of down (dump) and not much roll back, instead of trying to make spear 90ー to quick connect plate, why not put a little down (dump) into plate then attach spear 90ー to earth, this would give you more "up" when in full curl.... You would just have to be more careful when lowering with unit that you did not stab mother earth with spear...

I am not real clear understanding your description, it sounds backwards to me. But more "up" at full curl is more rollback.

If not enough rollback on a bale spear, the bale could slide off going down hill.

I think Dale is saying mount the spears with some up angle relative to the plate. That is another way to go about it, but it is best to have the bale fully resting against the frame and angled back.

"Curl" vs. "roll back" same thing, just different words (labels).... Depends on part of country as what popular verbiage is.... OOPS! Just checked the manual that came with my FEL and it refers to "curl" as "roll back"...

This is what confused me:
--------------------- instead of trying to make spear 90ー to quick connect plate, why not put a little down (dump) into plate ------------------------------------------

I don't see how you change the angle of the plate and down would be the wrong way. The plate latches flat to the QA. You can change the angle up or down of whatever is welded to the plate

But this isn't going on a QA plate. It is a Kubota QA system, there is no plate. You can see the extra rollback he put in with the bottom pin holes set out farther than the top hook connections:

You are not getting it.... IF attachment plate face is 20 degree down angle (in dump) and you attache spear level (parallel) to earth, then if you use "roll back" to max you get 20 degree (plus) up angle on spear.....

Here is the reason nobody makes them that way.

The 5x6 bales that I have hauled are 63 inches long. The longest spear I have seen for sale is 49 inches long.

The heavier bales might not stay on without full penetration of the spear.

That is also a good way to snap a spear.

Got the call today that my bale spear was finished!
Went on the adapter real easy. I will paint it after I am sure nothing needs tweaked.
