Buying Advice Backhoe on a SCUT - yea or nay?

/ Backhoe on a SCUT - yea or nay? #81
My brother does site work with an excavator, dozer and tracked skid steer, the skid steer gets lifted into a hole and levels in out nicely the excavator does most of the work including loading and emptying dump truck and then dozer smooths and pitches everything nice nice. The owner doesn't own a rubber tired backhoe period. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a 416 or similar just to mess around with but fact of the matter is there is no comparison.

Any homeowners or hobby farm owners which are the typical buyers of SCUTs load big trucks all day long?

Just have to disagree. Even a big mini excavator can load a truck faster than a backhoe. If you set up properly, biuld the pile up and sit on top of it and load the truck. Plus in hard compacted dirt the little tractor and the BH will fumble around and not work very good. Add in some stones that are good sized and its just a lot of messing around with a backhoe. You are also not really comparing apples to apples. I was suggesting mini ex bc it will do the job much quicker. Your suggesting the backhoe will load a truck faster. Well if you use the Massey to load a truck good luck getting that done. Good sized backhoe in comparison to a similar sized excavator. Excavator wins every time

I never said the Massey would load a truck faster. I’ll run against a mini loading trucks with my 310 any time. I’m loading a yard and a half a scoop with the front bucket and you’re loading depending on the bucket size a tiny fraction of a yard to maybe half a yard and I really doubt there’s very many minis that can use a half yard bucket. And building the pile for occasional use isn’t practical. Then if the ground isn’t fit to drive a loaded dump truck to the pile the mini is really useless. If you’re loading trucks full time ditch the mini and ditch the backhoe and get a real loader or a 60 ton trackhoe. And I don’t disagree a mini would be way better than a tractor backhoe but your comparing a but you’re comparing a few thousand dollar upgrade against a 40k dedicated machine. I wouldn’t be against trading my backhoe for a skid steer and a mini but that trade will cost me $50k for the second machine and a bigger truck and trailer so for now the backhoe will have to work.

I did a job last week where it wasn’t possible to get my truck into the driveway so I had to unload 1.5 miles away and drive the backhoe. Shouldn’t take more than an hour or so to drive the mini...

Yeh, that's what I thought too. People really get carried away rather than sticking to the question of the O.P.

I'll chime in with our use. We picked up a 1025R FILB in 2013 for use at the house location. I added a thumb to the backhoe & it has been extremely helpful with our woods cleanup around the house. It has been used for lifting/moving/holding fallen timber for me to cut up. It's been used for loading large sections of cut wood & stumps onto the truck & trailer. It has moved (& placed) large rock, and of course it has been used for digging holes & stumps.

Using a dolly makes installing/removing/storing the backhoe really pretty easy if you have a concrete surface like we do in the tractor storage shed. It is maybe 10 minutes or so to remove or replace, including the time to remove/replace the three point hitch arms.

It may not get used every day (or every week) but when needed, it saves time & my back. It also makes for a very good counter weight when doing FEL work like moving gravel or using forks. It is great to have available for those small jobs where you just couldn't justify the cost & time to get a rental, but otherwise couldn't do without using something more than just your body.

Agree on all points!

Hasn’t the op already decided he’s buying a backhoe? So doesn’t that render this thread done and anything after doesn’t really matter?

Did he? I missed that if so... but if so...  My BH takes me back 50 years playing with my Tonka toys in the sand box... I have to say with the real thing I might be having just as much fun.
