Hi everybody...My name is Lyle and I have a 226ac river farm along the Cacapon river in Capon Bridge, WV (northeastern mountains of West Virginia). Beautiful country! My land is mostly woods so I am looking to buy my first "big boy" tractor to help with maintaining a few miles of shale roads, cut/clear new trails, and pull logs for firewood. I am looking in the 30-40HP range and hoping to be able to afford a FEL for hauling gravel/shale, a grapple for clearing trails and pulling out wood, and a backhoe for digging in culverts and helping direct water flows. I've already read a lot of great info on here and it seems like a knowledgable group. I look forward to learning a lot from you guys so thanks in advance!

Lyle- Welcome to TBN. Definitely get a FEL. My first tractor did not have one. I did not know how much I needed a FEL until I got one. Good luck with the tractor research. It amazed me how all the different brands' sales&marketing departments skew their respective brands' performance data to put their tractors in the best possible light. There is no perfect tractor. Before you buy try get some seat time for feel.

Again good luck.

Welcome from Hurricane WV!!!
If you can squeeze the budget you may want to kick around something in the 50hp area. Gain some size, weight and lift capacity. I found the wider Kubota MX series worked a lot better for me in WV due to all the hills and uneven terrain.

Welcome... Im from the other side of the state, south of Wheeling WV. Ive been to Capon Bridge, but it's been nearly 30 years ago... had some childhood friends there, went to visit.

Good site here, lots of good advice...

I got a tractor that was too small when I bought it, but it has served its purpose, and was what I could afford thru financing. And the wife insisted we buy new. Id be ok with used and bigger, but the financing options, and local avalibility, was limited. If you have cash in hand, you can find a 20 year old machine with 1500-2000 hours with loader for $20k, and it will do you well.

With that amount of acreage, you will have a lot of chores and projects. It is easy to buy too small a machine and hard to buy too big of a machine. Based upon having 40 HP on 62 acres, I'd recommend a larger machine for that amount of acreage. I had a friend that lived in Paw Paw years back but he passed away. We would swim in the Cacapon at what they called the "throne" - a decorated chair next to a swimming hole.
