the rubber blades can harden in teh sun and weather, so for this better blades MAY last longer.
Most of what kills blades is a nick or cut - ice is a main culprit, but bird crap and bugs, chipped windshield too.
RainX or similar can work - BUT - if you EVER need a windshield repair it may not, most likely will not, work. The silicone or whatever the chem is in the blade/rainx won't let the tool and epoxy-like repair material stick to the windshield. So the free repair your insurance wil pay for won't work, you'll need a whole new windshield and end up paying your deductible if not for teh entire windshield.
"winter" blades usually have a rubber boot over them to keep snow/ice from building up in the arm 'mechanism' which helps them keep even pressure on the windshield.
