Posthole Digger Speed to run post hole digger

I use the opposite direction on the spool valve to reverse my auger out of the hole. Now that I have had a hydraulic auger for 3 or so years, I reminisce when you guys talk about unsticking an auger with a pipe wrench. not looking back.

I remember when I bought mine, two guys at TSC were chatting about augers and the one said, "I hooked mine up and started boring only to have the front tires lift off the ground and stall". They had me laughing out loud, but I always remembered that and only backed out of the hole frequently.

Idle speed up here in rock country. Go much faster than that you best have a bunch of grade 2 or 3 bolts with you.

I've learned to keep a close eye on mine being as I have a lot of "chewing gum like" clay also. Any time mine starts pulling the bit down when I'm not actually lowering the 3ph instead of just raising dirt out of the hole, I immediately pull it back up. Sometimes it's sticky coming out like a cork out of a bottle, so I figure I'm close to getting stuck. As long as I keep pulling it back up any time it starts automatically pulling itself down, it seems to work well. Haven't been stuck yet, knock on wood, but I'm sure I will be at some point. :)

What is a spool valve?

The hydraulic valve(s) on the tractor that control the SCV couplers.
He's saying that his PHD is hydraulically driven instead of PTO powered; and, as such, can be reversed.

Correct, mine is hydraulically powered so it can spin both directions.

Cant you just use the pipe wrench or a bar on the PHD's PTO shaft, and use the PHD's gear box's ~4:1 mechanical advantage to back out the auger using a lot less force?

My PHD is geared something like 3.7 to 1. So I would have to turn the PTO shaft 3.7 times more.

....but with 3.7 times less force (1/3.7).

Or use a 3.7 times shorter (1/3.7) pipe wrench and same amount of force as you would of on auger.

Same amount of work no matter which of 3 methods you use.
