Taxes would be $2300 an acre? Holy cow!

Agree with others here. Hay would be easy, but I think a bigger tractor might be needed. How about a few sheep or goats?

What are the chances you could plant trees and get a forest designation? By far, that is the easiest in my opinion, and it’s what we are doing with our ranch. 85 acres, taxes are $2650 per year.

I wonder if taxes per acre is being confused with assessed valuation per acre.

You might investigate the feasibility of planting fruit or nut trees and establishing a pick your own orchard.

If you don't want to go the hay route. You can get to farming with just three pieces of equipment. A bush hog, pull behind or three point sprayer and a seed drill. As you stated you can rent the drill. You can do a warm season planting of sunflower or millet and a cool season planting of oats. Both crops used for grazing animals or wildlife.

Just find out who farmed it last year and let him farm it going forward.

But does that small acreage qualify for ag? Here in Minnesota due to so many people having small acreages and selling produce they raised the size minimum to 10 acres. My father-in-law had about 3 acres of strawberries on his market farm and did quite well on them but he had about 65 total acres of vegetables adding more with each child born to make use of the labor pool.

The assessor in your county should tell you with a phone call what is required. Any farmer in your area can tell you because they obviously have the same problem: Either qualify as agricultural or pay a blasted fortune in ripoff property taxes.

One of the easiest ways to produce farm income on small acreage, is with bees.

Two colonies of bees, depending on their productivity in your area, can produce 200 lbs. of honey per year.
Sold locally, or at a flea market, that can be $2000.
Need more income? Buy more packages of bees, and equipment.

$10 Dollars a pound, I'm glad I don't get my honey there.
My wife and some of our company use honey as a sweetener in coffee,
I use it on bead and rolls especially corn bread. I pickup 2 or 3, 5#jugs at a time,
I'm paying $22 a jug, $21 if I bring back and he refills my empties.
We go thru a 5# in less then a month.

Old thread that resurfaced.....but what am I missing here? $2300/acre????? Who the h3ll pays $11,500 per year JUST IN TAX for a measly 5 acres?
