$10 Dollars a pound, I'm glad I don't get my honey there.
My wife and some of our company use honey as a sweetener in coffee,
I use it on bead and rolls especially corn bread. I pickup 2 or 3, 5#jugs at a time,
I'm paying $22 a jug, $21 if I bring back and he refills my empties.
We go thru a 5# in less then a month.

It is often sold retail at $10 per pound.
Depends on where you live, and where you buy it.

Old thread that resurfaced.....but what am I missing here? $2300/acre????? Who the h3ll pays $11,500 per year JUST IN TAX for a measly 5 acres?

It depends. Without the whole story you can't tell how wild it is or isn't. It may have a McMansion on it. Fractional acre building lots nearby may sell for $200K. In our area it might be expensive waterfront , etc. Even in relatively poor states, property tax doubles if you cannot get the land into "Farm Valuation" status. The OP describes himself as being in/near Chicago Ill. That could be ... who knows. Many homes with less than an acre lot are paying over $10K in property taxes near NY City, in CT and many places in the Northeast. A measly 5 acres where he lives might be worth a million bucks. We don't know.
I refuse to live where taxes on an ordinary 3br home and lot are $10K but there are plenty such places in this country, unfortunately.

By the way, some jurisdictions declare a piece of land qualifies for "Farm Valuation" if you produce $1000 worth of agri products off of it (true where my farm is.) They also declare it qualified for "Farm Valuation" if you have 10 head of cattle on it in some places. No one knows for sure but the Assessor.

I thought about that too.....

But if he is indeed paying over $11k for taxes....and property that valuable with a mansion on it, etc.....

Why is he worried about a mere $500 per year increase in taxes. Seems it would be cheaper to NOT farm the 5 acres, and just pay uncle sam the extra 5 bills

As my 3yr old daughter once famously said (when put on the carpet about which Aunt baked the best pies) "Everybody has their own way of do'in things."
Of course that was 45 years ago ...

But does that small acreage qualify for ag? Here in Minnesota due to so many people having small acreages and selling produce they raised the size minimum to 10 acres. My father-in-law had about 3 acres of strawberries on his market farm and did quite well on them but he had about 65 total acres of vegetables adding more with each child born to make use of the labor pool.

Don't know. I have 20 acres that are already in the AG classification before planting the berries. I raise a few steers to keep the AG classification.

I worked for an OEM automotive manufacturer & used to travel to Michigan a lot.

Houses there that would sell for 150,000 here were going for 7-800,000.

The people there were telling me their property taxes were 12-14,000 a year.
