Seems my starter is calling it quits. Trying to find a replacement. The only number I can find of the starter motor is on the solenoid. The part number is ZM68612V

Do not think this is the original starter. Anyone have an idea of a good part number and where to acquire this. Have charged the battery and had it tested in 2 places
and they both said it was a good battery. When I turn the key it just clicked and the motor did not turn over. Going directly to the starter and closing the circuit with
a trusty screwdriver it did the same thing. Just clicked. When it clicked, the radiator fan acted like it wanted to turn but it did not.

Yea if your nearbor in a larger size town, or even a small town and especially if racing is big in the are there will be electrical shops that will rebuild it for like $40 assuming it is a correct starter for the tractor this is a good option.

My 2310D was doing something similar. I disassembled the starter and one of the springs on the brushes was broken. I replaced the spring and it has been working great for the past 2 years. I meant to take pics of the process but forgot in the excitement of getting it fixed. It's a really simple repair and the "hardest" part was getting the brushes pushed back on reassembly.

Yanmar specified a 1.2 or 1.4 kw starter for my YM240. I found on Ebay a $100, new, 2.0 kw starter for Yanmar's larger engines that fits perfectly. It spins the engine frantically.

I described it in this old post that linked to RareElectrical, a top quality vendor. I see now the link in my post goes to a different vendor, same starter, $90 including shipping.

I like the faster cranking provided by this more powerful starter. I think it is broad-application and might match that 226 starter. Check the teeth, bolt pattern, length.

Yep, starters are a lot better now than they used to be. In fact, electric motors and generators are way more efficient across the board, even though they look similar and use the same parts as the older versions. That is, they spin faster and harder for less current than older designs.
Still, the older ones are adequate, and they are cheap and simple to rebuild.
Most auto-electric shops will rebuild any any starter for around $100. That's what our local shop charges. He doesn't care what kind of starter it is. They are all much the same inside.

But before taking a starter apart it makes sense to just replace (or rebuild) the solenoid. Most problems with starters that CLICK BUT DON"T SPIN and have a good battery are either bad battery cable connections or because the internal points in the solenoid are burnt and not passing enough current to the starter.

The bottom line is: If the battery and cables are good, replace the solenoid that sits on the starter before replacing the starter itself. Especially if it clicks good.
luck,

WOW, that's cheap for a tractor starter!. I remember one poster (unknown model) said his starter costs over $1000:eek:

Radios, don't you just love it when a grifter exposes himself through his ignorance? At least it lets you know who to avoid....

The truth is that most starter problems cost the mechanic zero dollars to fix; it's just a matter of taking it apart and making it right again. That's why starter rebuilds are a popular source of after-hours cash and beer money at the mechanical shop.

agreed, the starter I was talking about could not be bought ANYWHERE for less than over $1000 even at the dealer.. but I doubt ANY tractor manufacturer has custom built starters, it's just a matter of finding out the make and model number of the starter the tractor manufacturer uses, and save big time $$.

MJBilbo has 2 different starters listed. 336 on his Profile and asking for a 226 on the heading for the thread. Doesn't really matter and tre873 is correct. Although my brushes was just plain worn out. When I was looking at them I notice the lead to them was offset. Turned those suckers around and got 2-3 yrs. out of the starter. When I did have to rebuild it and new It was time to get the whole starter gone through they even commented on it. I believe it was I got all I could get out of those brushes. ;)
Now on the either or 226-336 doesn't matter they're the same. So you want to get out cheap and not much to replacing them and the bushings here you go!!Starter Repair Kit Fits Yanmar Tractor Hitachi Starter Model S12-77 | eBay  You can check it and the starter motor# is Hitachi S12-77
