I'm still trying to figure out which mower would be best for my property & tractor?

I have a JD 4700 which has about 40 HP at the PTO, maybe a bit less HP now as the tractor is 19 years old. For years I used by rotary mower to keep the property mowed which did the job but looked sloppy. My rotary mower is at the end of its life and I need something new. I just had about 10 additional acres of my land professionally cleared using a skid steer with a forest mulcher, and now I plan on keeping the cleared land myself. There will be lots of saplings, french broom, poison oak, blackberries, and tall grass which will grow back quickly. There are not really any rocks on my property but there is tons of chopped wood pieces (some pieces up to 2-3" thick) left behind my the forest mulcher. There will also always be many small raised mounds of dirt everywhere from the gophers. I'd like something very heavy duty which can handle the new growth of brush & saplings, but also cut the grassy open meadows. I already have a nice ride mower for my flat grassy areas I want to keep really nice, so I don't need a mower for cutting the grass like a nice lawn, but would prefer a cleaner job than my rotary provided. I was looking at the 63″ Betstco Super Heavy Duty Trail Cutter/Flail Mower with hyd. off-set, (About $3800.00) but looking through the threads someone wrote you cannot really mow in reverse with the Betstco flail mowers over rough material without risking damage. Is this the case? In many areas I'll be mowing in tight spaces and between trees, so backing into these spaces in reverse will be necessary. I also read that you have to go really slow while mowing with these type of flail mowers. Is this true? Having 10 plus acres to mow, I'm not sure if that's a good option?

I'm not looking at the Betstco solely because they are less expensive. I'm looking at them primarily because they have this heavy duty D160 model which can supposedly handle the really rough stuff and the grass without requiring more horse power than my tractor can provide. I contacted a few local dealers selling Gearmore and Vrisimo, but their heavy duty flail mowers required more horse power than my tractor produces. They were also about 40% more expensive than the Betstco.

I'm welcome to any thoughts & advice.

Thanks

Have you checked out a REARS SPF mower? I use a 84" SPF on 280 acre property that I maintain. We also had a forest mulcher go thru and remove willows, brush, oaks etc. This land contains just about everything from gopher mounds to broken concrete and rocks along with "coyote" brush and the willows which re-appear every year. These mowers are a little "pricey" but from what your describing, something along this line should work for you.
On the flip side, I've also used my Caroni on the same which is considered a medium duty mower.

I've never heard of REARS but will look into them.
I'm willing to pay for something "pricey" if it can handle the job year after year without breaking down. Looks like they have a heavier duty model than the SPF which is the IFA series but maybe that one is overkill?
Do they sell direct or do I go through a dealer?
Thanks

Unfortunately REARS only sells thru dealers, even parts. You can phone REARS (they're in Oregon) for info or questions. The IFA is a heavier duty mower BUT with the heavier larger "drum" requires more PTO power and with the "Y" blades being a bolted "single" mount, aren't as forgiving if you hit an immovable object where as the SPF drum with "Y" blades are "articulated" (blades with "D" rings).
If you should decide to buy one, be to get the front and rear guards.

Can you mow in reverse with the SPF mower? A lot of the places I need to get to I have to back into.
Also, how fast (or should I say slow) do you have to go with this mower to be effective? I read not all flails perform equally and some you have to travel extremely slow.

Not sure were you are at but I just ordered my Rears SPF from a local Pape’ Machinery Dealer in Oregon. They are pricey and compare with the best built flails anywhere. I got my mine with the hydraulic offset and duck bill blades. Paid an additional 200 bucks for 1/4” construction. As for speed it really depends on growth density, moisture and tractor HP and you seem to have thought of all those things. One things for sure with what your cutting / maintaining you want the duck style blades and not the ‘Y’ grass type, good luck

On another thought; you might be able to rent one for a hands on trial??

When you get it we'll hope to see pics and a review.

Hello skysummit,

You can mow in reverse with your future flail mower and it will allow you to bring the mown height down to 2 inches with no issues as long as you operate the flail mower at the recommended engine speed for the rear PTO 540 RPM speed.

NO WORRIES, we are only a private message, email or phone call away if you need help.

Please fill in your information so that we can help you furhter as we may have a member nearby that can help you with any flail mower issues if you think you have one that may be affectling how well it mows or if you have more questions.
