John Deere 112, John Deere 3010D
I've got a John Deere 3010 Diesel with a 24 volt system. I've had an issue this winter when I've turned the key the engine will crank and will not stop cranking when I back the key off. This has happened sporadically often until it drains the battery and I have to disconnect and recharge. However, a couple times the posts on the solenoid have been glowing red hot in these cases. The most recent time this happened left it in the starter being completely unresponsive to turning the key. I do have an electrical fuel pump so I can hear that engaging but the starter doesn't do anything. I'm wondering if the solenoid has gone bad. I would like instruction on how to test the solenoid. Attached is a diagram of the solenoid and the batteries. Any quick advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Why didn't you stop using the tractor, come here to ask when this happened second time. Understandablly, the starter was likely melted when this happened.
There is no "QUICK ADVICE"that will fix it now. Tell us if you have access to and understand how to use a multimeter or know someone who does and will come help you. From there,we can begin testing to see what it will take to fix this.

Lower than rated battery voltage when attempting to start engine can cause washer inside solenoid to stick to studs inside solenoid cap causing starter to remain engaged. JD 24 volt starters have a long history of "brush dust" building up inside starter creating a slight voltage drain. Is the added electric fuel pump 12 or 24 volt? If 12 volt that is one reason battery voltage is low because the electrical load on both batteries ""must be equal"" for both batteries to charge correctly

IMHO best solution would be to change electrical system from 24 volt to 12 volts. I'm very familiar with JD 24 volt system. I was employed at JD dealer from '66-'87 serving as service manager the last 13 yrs.
